About This Cause
The League of Idaho Cities is the 501(c)(3) affiliate of the Association of Idaho Cities. The Association of Idaho Cities (AIC), founded in 1947, focuses on advocacy at the state and federal level on behalf of Idaho’s 199 cities; training and education of elected and appointed officials; and technical assistance to city leaders. It has recently reinstated its sister organization, the League of Idaho Cities (LIC), which focuses on 5 important areas: Education Health and Wellness Youth Leadership Economic Needs Broadband LIC is interested in creating programs; partnering with other non-profits to enhance existing programs; providing grant finding assistance to existing programs; supporting and/or marketing programs to cities; helping to grow existing programs in our areas of emphasis with pass through grants; and more. The following are examples of projects LIC is involved with: Education: Readers Becoming Leaders: LIC staff has written a book about city governance to encourage 3rd graders to think about city leadership and prioritize literacy. The book includes a workbook that emphasizes STEM learning. City leaders will read the book in classes this Fall, and children will submit entries from completed workbooks to win monetary prizes for their classrooms to provide needed school supplies. LIC is partnering with Association for the Education of Young Children to help cities enhance kindergarten readiness. LIC is partnering with the Idaho Out of School Network to identify resources that our cities can use to enhance education & childcare. Health and wellness: Working with existing programs on homelessness, suicide prevention, fitness, behavioral health, and drug prevention – this is a growing area of need in our fast-growing state. Blue Cross Mayor’s Walk – LIC and AIC partner with the Blue Cross foundation to support this statewide program that gives Idaho mayors the opportunity to walk and earn funds for their community — all while setting a great example of being physically active. This annual challenge takes place in October and helps shine a spotlight on the importance of physical activity for children. In the seventh year of the challenge, 81 mayors registered and 76 reached the monthly step goal to each earn $1,000 to promote wellness programs in their community. Youth Leadership: Mayor’s Youth Advisory Councils -- is a program that allows high school students to participate in city leadership. The youth meet regularly to learn, serve, and grow as leaders. These councils are led by the youth with guidance from a mayor, city council member, community volunteer, city staffer, or a combination of all. The group is encouraged to look at ways to improve their community and are included in decision-making processes. AIC/LIC works with these groups to increase membership, funding opportunities, and collaboration opportunities with other LIC programming. These groups work in their communities on projects to prevent drug abuse beautify their city, improve safety, and much more. Readers Becoming Leaders – see above. Workforce Development: career fairs – see below. Economic needs • Workforce Development and career fairs -- LIC is currently working with The Idaho Workforce Development Center to create a soft skills training curriculum. The goal will be to train the MYACs to train their peers focusing on skills like how to dress for a job interview, how to write a resume, and more. The program will culminate in a career fair will be held at the junior high level, with the intent to expose these students at the youngest end of the workforce of exposing the students and their parents to the vast variety of career opportunities that are available in Idaho. Industry, Education, and local government will take part to encourage students to consider the many career options available, to plan for a career that allow them to thrive, and to encourage them to stay in Idaho. Broadband • LIC is working with Imagine Idaho and internet service providers to identify cities with broadband focus and then helping these cities with application needs, grant funding, plan production and project implementation. We also host monthly webinars to answer questions. • LIC is working with Department of Commerce to maximize broadband coverage and with an independent board, Imagine Idaho, to provide for unserved and underserved parts of Idaho LIC is looking for financial assistance in any of the areas listed above as well as partnering with existing programs to expand their reach by linking them to city leaders who can work to expand private programs into their cities.
