Mission Statement
Mission Statement: The San Antonio Clubhouse provides community, opportunity and hope for adults diagnosed with mental illness.
About This Cause
While our mission statement is simple, creating a sense of community and generating life-changing hope for our members is anything but simple. The name “clubhouse” invokes ideas of recreation, but the Clubhouse is not a place to merely hang out and socialize. The clubhouse is, first and foremost, a non-profit business. Our members find structure, routine and responsibility by volunteering to help run the Clubhouse, which is intentionally designed to maximize the amount of volunteer work necessary to operate. Members work with a small staff, as colleagues and equals, to run our non-profit. They develop confidence and skills for independent living and, for some, a return to employment. The Clubhouse is a carefully-calibrated environment designed to draw out the best in people—and it works. Our members’ sense of purpose and responsibility is in contrast to the erratic nature of their illness. Visitors are struck by our members’ sense of hope, belonging and usefulness. For many, this is the first place in a long time that they have felt comfortable, accepted and valued. The Clubhouse model is a widely-recognized evidenced-based practice. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), the Clubhouse model is an “exemplary practice,” which has been “extensively documented, validated, and replicated to improve the quality of life for severely and persistently mentally ill consumers.” The Clubhouse model won the Gold Award from the American Psychiatric Association in 2003, and in 2014, won the Conrad Hilton Humanitarian Award, the world's most prestigious humanitarian award. At the SA Clubhouse, we’ve taken the model and iterated upon it with creative programming to meet the needs of our members in an increasingly isolating and complex society. Through our innovations we’re creating community, opportunity, and hope. Our core-services are: To create meaningful volunteer opportunities for our members, who in-turn help themselves by volunteering at the Clubhouse; to directly help members reach their employment, wellness, and other goals; and to help members further their physical wellness through education, activities, and nutrition. Founded in 2003, we’ve grown from a 100 square-feet in a church basement to a modern 20,000 squarefoot office. Our 12 staff facilitate the work of the clubhouse, with the majority of the work being done by our member-volunteers. In 2016, 448 members volunteered at the clubhouse, contributing over 53,000 hours of volunteerism. Our members also reported: 70% experienced fewer hospitalizations; 83% believe their mental health has improved; 87% feel they have better relationships with family members; and 87% say they value themselves as people. 66 members also found paid employment last year through the support of the Clubhouse. Our success is largely due to technical and program innovations we’ve developed. Over the next five years, we will emerge as the country’s premiere Clubhouse, with our ideas and methods spreading throughout Texas and the United States.
