Art as Mentorship is a 501(c)(3) organization empowering young people, through music, to write their own success stories.
About This Cause
VISION: Art as Mentorship envisions an inclusive community where historically underrepresented and underserved young artists are emboldened to raise their voices through music. We believe the future will be made brighter by enabling the healing qualities of music to unite us. PURPOSE: Art as Mentorship is the only organization in the Midwest building a network of music industry mentors, many of whom are world-class, Grammy Award-winning professionals. Art as Mentorship employs five professional musicians in Kansas City, including members of Making Movies and The Greeting Committee, building a community of artists who give back so that young people’s lives are transformed through three pillars of education: JOB SKILLS LIFE SKILLS MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT Through our programs, young artists learn The Four C’s, 21st Century Skills for their future: Critical Thinking Communication Collaboration Creativity IMPACT: From its beginnings as a no-cost, pay-it-forward songwriting camp that Making Movies and local community center Mattie Rhodes offered annually for nine years to 200 young immigrant, Latinx, and low-income artists in Kansas City, Art As Mentorship became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in 2017 with a part-time staff of working musicians, board of directors, advisory board and large group of volunteers who serve in a wide array of capacities. Since 2017: 450 young artists found their voices in song writing Three free music camps have provided young artists enrichment during summer break 35 Rebel Song Academy Live! virtual sessions connected us with our extended community during COVID-19 263 students engaged in virtual programming 10 young artists have begun music industry careers 5,200 people participated in AMERI’KANA TV online
