Mission Statement
"Sickle Cell Disease kills 50-70% of children before their fifth birthday" ~ World Health Organization In Nigeria, that number comes to about 90,000 out of 150,000-200,000 born each year. Our Mission is to significantly improve the quality of life of medically fragile children - those suffering from malnutrition, brain disorders, genetic conditions (including sickle cell disease) and other chronic diseases - especially children living in underprivileged communities around the world. We hope to do this by: 1. Raising awareness on such chronic conditions and how best to address them through various media platforms 2. Providing the best possible care to every patient at no cost to them through integrated clinical consultations, education and research. We hold free clinics every Friday in Nigeria. 3. Constantly seeking out (researching) efficient, safer and more cost-effective approaches to addressing these conditions. We seek for effective nutraceuticals that have proven track records in dealing with such chronic diseases and build a bridge between the source of such solutions and those in need of them. OUR CURRENT FOCUS: Eradicating the suffering of children with sickle cell disease (SCD) all over the world.
About This Cause
The Brain and Body Foundation (BBF) has been existence for over five years in Nigeria and over three years in the USA, and is a not-for-profit 501c3 organization registered in both countries. It was established specifically for the purpose of improving the quality of life of children diagnosed with brain disorders and genetic conditions like sickle cell disease. BBF, in partnership with Nigerian government (there is a legal agreement between the two entities), international donors and funders, non-governmental organizations and well-meaning individuals, seeks to provide well-researched, well-proven and safe modalities free of charge to children and adults who would otherwise not have had access to them. Our activities and the result of our activities (testimonials) can all be found on our website – www.brainandbodyfoundation.org - as well as our social media pages: @BrainandBodyFoundation (FB, Instagram, LinkedIn), and @brainbodycentre (Twitter) Our Current Project with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD): The government of Nigeria has recently granted approval to BBF to carry out research on children with sickle cell disease in government hospitals to prove that specific nutrients can significantly improve their quality of life. We are seeking individuals organizations to collaborate on this project. Cost of this project is $200,000 Why This is Important: Currently, there are no real practical solutions to SCD. Most children and adults live extremely painful lives which are suddenly cut short before the reach their 30th birthday. This seemingly hopeless condition creates a significant burden on families, hospitals and the nation as a whole. Through our work with over 500 children, we have been able to demonstrate that children and adults with SCD can see significant improvements in their quality of life simply by taking specific nutrients. These improvements have never before been seen in Nigeria, which has the highest number of cases of SCD in the world. Here is a link to view sample video testimonials from our patients: https://www.brainandbodyfoundation.org/sickle-cell-disease-2-2-2/ The problem is, we are the only ones (that I know of) seeing results as remarkable as this. We hope to see these same results reproduced in public and private hospitals in other parts of the country so that people with SCD, children especially, can have a better chance at living a normal life. But this cannot happen without a change in the way SCD is managed by healthcare workers all over the country. Hence the reason for this research project. A detailed description of the project can be found here: https://www.brainandbodyfoundation.org/bbf-research/ And here: https://www.brainandbodyfoundation.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/ACEMANNAN-RESEARCH-PROPOSAL.pdf Here are some sobering statistics related to Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) in Nigeria: 1. Nigeria is home to over 20% of the world’s population of SCD 2. Between 150,000 and 200,000 children born with the condition each year 3. Between 2 and 4 million individuals are suffering with the disease 4. There are over 40 million with the sickle cell trait 5. 50-70% of children born with SCD will die before their fifth birthday 6. 50% of all boys born with SCD will be infertile by the time they reach adulthood Our goal with this six-month research is: 1. To prove that strengthening the immune system can significantly improve the quality of life of children with SCD. 2. To use the results to advocate for a policy change in the treatment of SCD. The Current treatment approach to SCD: Once a child has been diagnosed with SCD he or she is placed on basic routine medications. In Nigeria, this basically consists of: folic acid supplementation, an antimalarial, and in some cases, a multivitamin, e.g. vitamin B complex. In other countries, antibiotics are routinely prescribed. That’s it...and then they just wait until a crisis occurs. In younger children (1-6 years of age), a crisis occurs in one of two ways: 1. Sudden, excruciating bone pains, especially in the small bones of the hands and feet, otherwise called bone pain crises. 2. Sudden loss of blood volume, either by spontaneous large-scale disintegration/break up of red blood cells, or by sudden sequestration (or pooling) of blood into organs like the liver and spleen. The former requires infusion of fluids, pain relief, sedation, and treatment of infections. The latter requires, in addition, BLOOD TRANSFUSION. Both cases usually require hospital admission, sometimes for days. The Problem with The Standard Approach: Here’s the problem: First of all, the routine drugs do little to prevent the crises and improve the quality of life of these patients. In addition, many parents do not have access to standard hospitals where these treatments can be given, so they resort to native or homemade therapies. Many children die while having the crisis. Regardless of whether or not they are having the crisis, most children and adults live a life of pain, misery, and suffering, mental as well as physical. This is simply unacceptable, in my opinion. What is needed is an approach that is safe, effective and can be used in remote, rural areas, as well as in the cities. And supporting the immune system using nutrients can go a long way in achieving that. Our Project: We are seeking a $200,000 grant/donation to fund this research project over a 12-month period. What is funding needed for? 1. Lab tests: They will all need a full (complete) blood count and reticulocyte count at baseline and monthly until the end of the study duration. 2. Transportation of staff to and from hospitals 3. Transportation of patients and their children/wards to and from hospitals. Most will not come, even if you are giving them free medications, unless the cost of transportation to and from the hospital is also taken care of. 4. Purchase of routine medications: all patients involved in the study will need to take the routine medications – half of them will also take the immune support medications for adequate comparison. 5. Research: data collection, analyses and reports. 6. Stipends for hospital staff - doctors and nurses- involved in the research 7. Purchase of supplements for 500 to 1000 children that will be enrolled in this multi-center study 8. Hospital fees Future directions: For most children under the age of 12, simply strengthening the immune system can go a long way towards helping them live normal or near normal, pain free lives. What we have discovered is that, as they approach puberty and beyond, pubertal changes begin to take place that complicate the picture. These include: 1. “Permanent” damage to the joints, most especially the hip joint; a condition known as avascular necrosis of the head of the femur – damage to the hip joint requiring hip replacement (which is not an option for most) 2. Infertility, especially in males. 3. Lung damage because of repeated infection and inflammation in the lungs 4. Reduced/stunted growth 5. Damage to the gastrointestinal system, with adverse effect on the gut flora 6. Brain damage from repeated strokes 7. Damage to the eyes with risk of permanent blindness 8. Others Even in severe cases, we have proven from our work with the foundation, that proper, targeted nutrient therapy can result in significant improvement.
