Mission Statement

Via Brooklyn develops theatrical productions, coupled with interactive programming, to engage audiences around the world. Our mission is to foster enthusiasm, contemplation, and community by blurring the traditional lines between stage, canvas, camera, music, page, and everything in between. We believe the synergy of artistic media can create visionary live theatre experiences.

About This Cause

Via Brooklyn Theatre Corporation dedicates itself to producing plays, film screenings, concerts, and performances, along with thematically-related programming, that blur the lines between varying artistic forms in order to foster enthusiasm, contemplation, and community with the audience. In doing so, we encourage topical conversations surrounding our work, and accomplish this in the following ways: forums on the cultural significance and historical context of our theatrical productions, low-cost or free performances, post-show talk-backs with the cast and production team, and educational outreach geared toward students interested in learning more about how theatre and other art forms are created. Via Brooklyn Theatre Corporation is a theatre company that was conceived in 2016 by four friends and long-time colleagues in the professional theatre. Our maiden production took place in Southampton, New York in July of 2017. We partnered with the Southampton Cultural Center, a local not-for-profit dedicated to bringing performance and visual art to the community, to produce a three-week run of the acclaimed play "The 39 Steps". The run of our show included pay-what-you-can evenings one night per week for Long Island locals. In addition to the play, we mounted a screening of the original film at the Southampton Arts Center, arranged a marching unit for the Southampton 4th of July parade, and organized a murder mystery party for the community and our patrons. During the final week of performances we scheduled a free talk-back with the actors and director of the play, as well as Pam Laudenslager and Remmel Dickinson, two of the producers of the original Broadway production. Our second project, completed in November 2017, was arranged in conjunction with the New York-based not-for-profit, “The American Friends of the Wallace Collection”. We co-produced the 20th-century Spanish opera "Goyescas", based on the art of renowned Spanish painter Francisco Goya, in the galleries of a museum—The Wallace Collection—presenting a touring exhibition of Goya’s works in London, England. Our role was providing operational support, U.S.-based advertising, fundraising assistance, and artistic guidance. Our third endeavor in July 2018 was titled "VB Reads: Feast and Fiction". It was the start of a play reading series to perform staged readings of both new and classic work. In this case, the work we explored was titled "Monica: This Play is Not About Monica Lewinsky", and was done in conjunction with a local restaurant called Claude’s at The Southampton Inn, where audience members could choose from different food packages to enjoy during the course of the reading. This reading provided a chance for the playwright to hear her developing work aloud, while also getting involved with the local community, allowing the audience to provide feedback as well as see a behind the scenes peek of how play development works. We then brought this same reading to New York City in November of 2018 to engage a different community with the material and further develop the play. We are currently in pre-production to bring "Monica: This Play is Not About Monica Lewinsky" Off-Broadway to 59E59 in July 2019, followed by a run at the world renowned Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August 2019. Finally, in November of 2018, we continued our relationship with The American Friends of the Wallace to help develop and produce a new work surrounding the life of 19th century English aristocrat and art collector Richard Wallace, the founder of the Wallace Collection Museum. The show, titled "The Collection", took place within the gallery spaces, touring around Wallace’s home, and using items from his personal collection. This production helped celebrate the bicentennial anniversary of the galleries to the public. The long-term intention for our company is to use this play as a starting point for a series of similarly-imagined shows for American audiences in museums and galleries in Connecticut and New York State, making famous artistic spaces and collections even more accessible to the public by giving them historical context and by creating historically-based interpretational performances. In all of these cases, Via Brooklyn’s mission was to thoughtfully craft productions that consider the setting, related programming, and having the public gain a greater understanding and appreciation for each individual work. We believe that by exploring the synergy of various artistic mediums, we can foster enthusiasm, contemplation, and community with our audience about the world around them. Our emphasis on accessibility and extensiveness drive home our mission of overall public arts education.
