Mission Statement

Kindred’s vision is a society where communities care for all children as if they were their own. Our mission is to create the conditions (relationships, knowledge, capacity, structures and impetus) for families, staff, and education system leaders to collaborate to realize equitable opportunity and life chances for students.

About This Cause

Kindred supports elementary school parents of diverse backgrounds to work together to support the well-being of all children in their school. Our partnership with schools endures over three years, beginning with building trusting relationships and growing parent impact by building the capacity of parents to lead the change. During our first year of programming, Kindred recruits a group of parents (and in some schools, staff) who are racially, linguistically, and economically reflective of their school to participate in two separate dialogue groups of 8-10 parents each. Parents spend 10 sessions exploring their identities, histories, common aspirations for their children, and the root causes of inequity. During the final three sessions, parents identify a specific area to address and take targeted action to make their school more inclusive and equitable. Kindred guides the participants through implementation of their selected action, and in doing so build their skills to carry forward further actions in their schools. During the second year, Kindred trains parents and staff who were part of the initial dialogue groups to run their own dialogue groups. Simultaneously, Kindred supports the creation of a parent or staff equity committee with all of the parents or staff who initially participated in dialogue circles. These equity groups are run by the parent and staff alumni. Through this committee's work, Kindred supports the development of a sustainable organization of parents and staff to carry forward the equity work once Kindred leaves the school, which typically occurs after its third year of partnership. We started with 15 parents three years ago. Today Kindred partners with 13 elementary schools across Washington, DC with over 400 parents and staff to advance racial and educational equity in their schools. We all want a world that is better for our children. This begins with adults around them engaging in meaningful conversations and holding space for empathy and dialogue, cultivating a community that cares for all children as if they were their own.
