About This Cause

Cielo Communities Foundation (Cielo Foundation - Fundación Cielo) is a 501 (c)3. Our vision is to alleviate poverty, promote gender equality and inspire social entrepreneurship that transforms society. Our work, for now, is mainly focused on native Mayan communities in the Yucatan peninsula. We strongly promote Education as a mean to advance society. We work closely with local government officials, NGO’s, Academic Institutions and the private sector to improve living conditions, generate sustainable job opportunities, promote formal education and environment conservation. We are part of the greater Cielo Family, a group of organizations that share the same values and philosophy. Our Cielo Family includes: Cielo Hammocks (Formerly Hammock Boutique), Cielo Hamacas, Cielo Foundation and Cielo Adventure (in the works). Cielo Foundation is instrumental to our award winning Social Impact model by Google, VentrueScale and ANA "SHE Network" (Sustainable Holistic Empowerment Network). Our Sustainability reflects on our ability to run a profitable business allowing us to generate sources of income to ~900 families (and growing) who hand weave hammocks from home. The Holistic component comes for our integrated approach of not limiting ourselves to just create jobs but also work with the local governments, academic institutions, private sector and NGOs to improve overall living conditions. Empowerment, comes for the economic independence that results from being lifted out of poverty. Finally, the Network represents the families of weavers, their communities and the institutions that make this possible. Our holistic approach looks to empower women through education and professional development. We also work with the younger generations of Mayan people ensuring access to more opportunities via advanced education. Lastly, we work closely with local government officials and higher education institutions to improve living conditions and generate sustainable job opportunities. Some of our workshops and programs include sexual education for teenagers, literacy classes for adults, English for children, training for midwives, drug, violence and alcoholism workshops, scholarship funds for advanced education, amongst others. Our goal is to alleviate poverty and end the generational cycle of poverty in artisan communities across the globe. OUR STORY Cielo Foundation was officially launched in the summer of 2014 by Constantino and Josefina Urzaiz. We are social impact entrepreneurs who recognize incredible economic disparity in Mexico and the world and have set ourselves to do our part starting in our community. We have launched a group of organizations with the goal of driving social change by disrupting poverty and promoting gender equality. We generate a sustainable source of income to ~900 families who hand weave hammocks from home. Today, our work directly impacts 3,000+ people and our scalable sustainable model ensure our reach and impact will continue to grow. Our work in the community with the local government, academic institutions and NGOs further amplifies our impact promoting Education as a catalyzer to break out of the poverty cycle. Poverty is a societal issue that is receiving much needed focus as priority for the millennium goals is Poverty Alleviation. We want to be a global beacon on how to do business promoting social development. EDUCATION WILL SET YOU FREE Cielo Foundation has a strong focus on Education. We believe that only through formal Education we can truly transform systemically society. We are looking for lasting change that will provide opportunities to the children of our artisans. Access to quality education will make community members more competitive for higher paying jobs, lead the communities to be more self-sufficient, and improve community health through knowledge of preventative health measures. We run an intensive summer program with the collaboration of volunteers from around the world. Our selected summer volunteers come and live in our communities of weavers in the center of the Yucatan peninsula for approximately 10 weeks. Interns help Fudacion Cielo's staff run programs that include educational children's activities, a mentorship program for high school students interested in continuing their education, a Health Fair, sports league's, literacy clases for adults, amongst others. Our Volunteer Summer program is a great success. If you are interested in being part of our Summer 2018 Internship program, check back in January 2018 for application details. We hire undergrad or a graduate students with a strong interest in social sciences, development, healthcare and spanish. The Fundación Cielo Team
