Mission Statement
We inspire, engage, and educate about the ecological importance of native pollinator species and the diverse native plant communities essential for their survival - and ours. We are committed to the creation and restoration of pesticide-free pollinator corridors throughout the Rogue Valley.
About This Cause
Pollinator Project Rogue Valley is (currently) a volunteer-led Oregon-registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit concerned about the health of our native pollinators and plant communities. We believe that everyone can participate in our mission and make a difference. Our mission is to inspire, engage, and educate youth and adults about the importance of our native plants (trees, shrubs, flowering plants, grasses, and more) to help restore some of the ecosystem that is native to this beautiful region in Southern Oregon. Pollinator Project Rogue Valley invites you to be a “pollinator partner” and contribute to the greater good of the world. Help us help pollinators prosper in the Rogue Valley and beyond. We hold a vision of “people, plants, and pollinators” co-creating together. Participate with us! Working with volunteers and engaging the public, we are planting seeds, propagating plants, delighting in seeing caterpillars eating leaves of native plants, seeing wasps as magnificent creatures for the garden, enjoying the beauty of a 'natural' winter garden, watching bees that nest in the ground, and helping to restore urban communities to a more healthful, beautiful, and supportive environment for pollinators and people alike. We are based in Phoenix, OR, a small community south of Medford, OR, the county seat. We currently work out of a rented office with a 1000 sq ft native pollinator demonstration garden, a small native plant propagation nursery, and a small educational storefront. We engage the community by tabling at community events, hosting classes and workshops, and partnering with other organizations with similar missions. We sell seeds that we collect and package, host annual plant sales, create and sell educational materials, share our knowledge and expertise with visitors, and help people impacted by the 2020 Almeda Fire to plant native pollinator gardens. Our board is passionate and committed to our mission. We now have a full time Pollinator Pals Education Coordinator, and a part-time Nursery Manager. We depend on our 25 or so regular volunteers to help us with much of our work, but smart and dependable staff is what is needed, to handle everything from weeding to social media to volunteer coordination, to take us to the next level. Our goal is to find a place of our own to multiply our organizational impact, with an Education Center, Native Plant Nursery, and Demonstration Gardens. Our 5 programs work together synergistically to help create sustainable and resilient ecosystems, food systems, and communities: Habitat Academy (adult education), Pollinator Pals (youth education), From Fire to Flowers Pollinator Gardens (creating and installing native pollinator gardens in neighborhoods rebuilding after the Almeda Fire ), Growing Gardens (our native plant nursery and demonstration garden), Rogue Buzzway (ecosystem connectivity). Our Values Education: We are guided by our passion to teach and engage with the public of all ages. Our work is guided by science to conserve and protect pollinators as well as our local environment. Gaia Principle: We believe the Earth to be a living system in which both a profound unity and respect for all life is critical, especially as it relates to our local pollination ecology. Collaboration: We depend on collaborating with the community to carry out our mission and amplify our collective impact. Commitment: We are a team that is committed to our cause and inspired by a shared devotion to the place we call home. Integrity: We believe it is vital to be honest and transparent in our organization’s work and with each other. Respect: We honor and value each person, their experiences, and contributions. This respect extends to the importance of acknowledging the indigenous peoples of North America as well as their culture, stewardship and on-going legacy. JEDI (Justice, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion): We respect and support the diverse ways that humanity expresses itself and invite all races, genders, orientations, and abilities to our table and into our gardens. We feel it is important to stay curious and keep learning and adapting with an open mind and heart. The pollinator crisis is a global issue…..but we know we can help our local pollinators. Working together, we can take a stand against pesticide use or create a pollinator landscape full of native plants, whether on a farm, in a garden, or pots on a porch - and make a difference for the greater ecosystem. Pollinator Project Rogue Valley humbly acknowledges that we work and live upon the ancestral territory of the Shasta and Takelma Tribes and other native peoples. We are grateful to the elders and their people who cared for these lands in close connection to the earth and all beings here. We acknowledge that native people still live here, and deeply honor their sovereignty. We are thankful to be on these sacred lands with the plants and animals that inhabit them.
