Mission Statement

The Sarara Foundation is working to protect the 850,000-acre Matthews Forest Range and provide cradle-to-career support for the Samburu community in Northern Kenya. Our vision is for indigenous communities in Northern Kenya to continue to live alongside wildlife, retain and celebrate their unique cultural heritage and live sustainably and prosperously in a modern world for many generations to come. We believe that for our vision to be fully realized, we must execute our work over a full 20-year generation cycle. Through this model, we hope to develop an open source, blueprint for community conservation around the world.

About This Cause

The Sarara Foundation's vision is to enable the Samburu in Northern Kenya to continue a life alongside wildlife, retain and celebrate their unique cultural heritage and live sustainably and prosperously for many generations to come. The Landscape Matthews Range, an 850,000-acre wildlife conservancy, contains a unique environmental combination of semi-arid desert and afro mountain rainforest. The mountain range is a critically important watershed for Northern Kenya. Previously devoid of any wildlife, Namunyak Conservancy is now home to Kenya’s 2nd largest elephant population, Kenya’s largest population of reticulated giraffe, as well as hyena, kudu, lion, leopard, and approximately 23,000 ultra-traditional nomadic pastoralists. The Challenge: Population pressure, rapid urbanization, land degradation and loss of keystone species and human-wildlife-conflict are just some of the factors contributing to the global climate crisis and fuelling poverty cycles in under resourced rural areas. Our Approach: Our approach sincerely engages the indigenous Samburu community, preserves cultural independence, and builds economic strength through smart planning and local leadership partnerships. Our Programs: Nomadic Healthcare: Our nomadic and domestic healthcare support is designed to focus specifically on delivering world-class paediatric and maternal care serving to underpin a safe & healthy state of being for Mother’s, newborns and children. Nomadic Montessori: The long term prosperity of wildlife in Northern Kenya depends entirely on in-depth generational support for children being born today. To bring this to life, we deliver best in class educational models, such as Montessori, to serve and educate both nomadic and centralised communities on biodiversity conservation. Conservation: Sarara’s conservation approach focuses on problems arising from human environmental impact and human-wildfire conflict. These issues have a negative impact on health and the maintenance of a clean and green environment. Special emphasis is placed on managing the impacts of rapid population increases. Reteti Elephant Sanctuary: The Sanctuary takes in orphaned and abandoned elephant calves with an aim to release them back into the wild herds. This is the result of a widely recognised and expanding grassroots movement of community-driven conservation across northern Kenya; a movement that is growing new economies, transforming lives and conserving natural resources. Eco-Tourism: Sarara Camps is comprised of three unique ecolodges which are owned and run by the Samburu. The lodges support the Sarara Foundation, and provide travelers with access to one of the world’s last truly intact wildernesses while blending authentic cultural access with world-class game viewing.
