Mission Statement
PAWA is an all-volunteer organization that is the animal-welfare partner in a N.C. state prison dog-training program, A New Leash on Life. Dogs who are hard to adopt because of minor behavioral challenges are paired with qualifying inmate-trainers in ten-week sessions of training, under the supervision of professional dog trainers. The dogs are then adopted into loving homes. In the process both dogs and inmate-trainers experience--often for the first time--unconditional love. We are responsible for all the costs of the program, and receive no government, United Way, or other support.
About This Cause
We are an all-volunteer non-profit organization with two major goals: the first is to partner with the Forsyth Correctional Center, a minimum-security N.C. state prison in Forsyth County, NC, in the dog-training program, A New Leash on Life. A New Leash on Life offers both dogs and inmates a second chance. The dogs, who have behavioral challenges and need training, are paired with qualifying inmate-trainers for nine weeks. Under the supervision of professional dog trainers from the Winston-Salem Dog Training Club, the dogs are house and crate trained; learn basic and some advanced obedience and basic agility; and are then ready to be adopted into loving homes. These dogs, because they are initially poorly socialized, are saved from likely euthanasia. The inmates' lives are also dramatically changed: For inmates who successfully complete this program, the recidivism rate is approximately 6%, as compared with a national average of over 60%! We are responsible for all the costs of the program, including dog food, treats, training materials, veterinary care and medicines. We also are responsible for finding professional trainers, and we arrange adoptions into loving homes. We receive no government, corporate, United Way, or other support. Our second goal is to work with smaller animal rescue groups in our area to form alliances, share resources, and eliminate unnecessary duplication in services.
