About This Cause
“You only have yourself to blame. You deserve what’s happening to you. You should be ashamed.” These words are designed to cut us down, strip us of our humanity, eviscerate our hope of a better self. We’ve all been told these things. Sometimes, by ourselves. And after a while, we believe them. We become a lesser version of ourselves--we become less than human. For those on the margins of our society, the people we don’t often see or hear from, these aren’t just words. This is a reality every single day. The lives we are most responsible for lifting become the stories that we forget, the stories that we use to blame future generations. Ending this cycle starts with restoring dignity and agency to our youth and the marginalizing experiences they endure. To sustain this change, our workplaces need to adopt a habit of empathic listening and create a culture of compassion and empowerment. Our first intervention coaches high school juniors and seniors to reclaim control and ownership over their marginalizing experiences through discovery of their voice and story. Our second intervention equips working professionals with the tools to activate compassion and social change through sharing their own narrative and to practice listening for diversity, equity, and inclusion.
