Mission Statement
The Immigrant and Refugee Law Center provides free community-based legal services to low-income immigrant and refugee families in the Greater Cincinnati area in order to create a more welcoming, safer, and more stable community for families.
About This Cause
In response to the urgent, unmet need for legal services for immigrant and refugee families in Cincinnati, the Immigrant and Refugee Law Center (IRLC) began operations in February 2018. IRLC provides critical pro bono legal services to low-income immigrants and refugees in Greater Cincinnati to stabilize families and secure children’s futures. Our clients are immigrants, asylum seekers, and refugees, including unaccompanied minors and immigrant and refugee survivors of domestic violence and other serious crimes. IRLC utilizes a community-based approach to deliver pro bono legal services to low-income immigrants and refugees, and our school-based model is unique nation-wide. Our staff provide direct legal services, educate, and engage local attorneys as volunteers, and train current law students to support the delivery of legal representation and education for low-income immigrants and refugees in Greater Cincinnati. Our impact is tangible. Working in close partnership with Cincinnati Public Schools and other local agencies, we represent a diverse array of clients. IRLC has had a tremendous impact on the community. In just six years we have served well over 1,400 individuals from more than 87 different countries, impacting over 1,200 children in 66 schools throughout the city. We have held 129 youth programs and Know Your Rights programs to educate the community. And we have trained nearly 300 law students, interns, and volunteer attorneys and more than 1200 community advocates - helping to shape the future of immigration advocacy and tremendously increasing the capacity of our legal community. We are the trusted resource for immigrant and refugee families in our community, supported by the City of Cincinnati, Hamilton County, local and regional foundations, and many generous individual donors. We are able to have this tremendous impact because of our innovative programs. We are doing things that no other organization does, leveraging our unique school-based and collaborative models. From our in-school services; our holistic team work with immigrant juveniles; strategic medico-legal collaborations with UC College of Medicine and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital to advance legal and health equity for noncitizens; to our highly valued internship program and volunteer attorney program, we continuously evolve our programs to meet the needs of the community. Our goal is for people to get the help they need, whatever that looks like.
