Mission Statement

We see a world in which no person is needlessly blind or vision impaired.

About This Cause

We are an international development organization focusing on blindness prevention and Indigenous Australian health. We are independent, not-for-profit, politically unaligned and secular. The Fred Hollows Foundation is inspired by the work of the late Professor Fred Hollows (1929–1993). Fred was an eye doctor, a skilled surgeon of international renown and a social justice activist. Fred was committed to reducing the cost of eye health care and treatment in developing countries and improving the health of Indigenous Australians. The Foundation was established in 1992 shortly before Fred passed away, with the aim of continuing and expanding on the program work he started. Today, 4 out of 5 people who are blind have a condition that is preventable or treatable - and 90% of these people live in the developing world. The Foundation now works in 25 countries and has helped restore the sight of over two million people worldwide. In 2018, we treated 24,799,814 people with antibiotics for trachoma and distributed 125,619 pairs of glasses. We screened 5,306,365 people in 2018. We also conducted just under 1 million eye operations and treatments including: *163,960 cataract operations *42,264 surgeries to treat trachoma *17,605 diabetic retinopathy treatments *705,278 other sight saving or improving interventions In 2018 we trained 59, 207 health workers, including community health workers, surgeons, clinic support staff and teachers. 2.4 million school children and community members were also educated in eye health and sanitation. We also built or renovated 9 medical facilities and provided 1,017 medical facilities, training centers and schools with necessary equipment. We also know that blindness and vision impairment disproportionately affect women, so we focus on delivering evidence-based policy, programming and advocacy to achieve gender equity in eye health. Our aim is clear: to end avoidable blindness. In some countries, $25 can restore sight. Your support could cover the cost of a simple 20 minute operation and help transform the life of someone living with avoidable blindness.
