About This Cause
Girl Rising's origins began 10 years ago with the release of the Girl Rising feature film, which followed the stories of nine ordinary, extraordinary girls. The documentary was a global phenomenon, igniting a movement for girls' education and proving that stories can inspire positive social change for girls. Fast forward, the Girl Rising non-profit is in five countries and has helped facilitate the education of millions of girls worldwide. How We Work: WE CREATE films, media content and educational resources that tell the stories of girls and the seismic ways educating girls transforms families, communities and nations. WE COLLABORATE with organizations to support locally-led change that strengthens education and greater opportunity for girls. WE ACTIVATE a movement for girls’ education and rights with stories and partnerships that change mindsets, norms and policy. Through RISE, our flagship education program, Girl Rising and our partners empower adolescents in marginalized communities to become Resilient, Inclusive, Skilled, and Educated individuals. By equipping young people with critical skills like digital literacy and providing the knowledge and support they need to pursue their education and aspirations, RISE creates lasting, positive change. The program engages teachers, parents, caregivers, and administrators as allies, through a holistic approach to addressing the challenges, biases and barriers that adolescents face. RISE was developed from our decade-long experience designing and evaluating programs to challenge gender norms and equip adolescents with the tools they need to thrive. RISE takes a holistic approach, building skills in areas such as social-emotional learning, digital and financial literacy, climate adaptation, and health and well-being, while also engaging the adults who shape their lives. This comprehensive focus ensures that both young people and their communities are prepared to succeed together. At the heart of RISE is the power of stories. Stories serve as a compelling way to introduce complex topics, ignite curiosity, and build understanding and empathy. Through the curriculum, adolescents gain voice, confidence, and agency. They explore their rights, identify aspirations, and understand the support systems available to help them achieve their goals. We work side by side with innovative local education organizations in India, Kenya, Pakistan, and Guatemala that truly know and understand their communities. These long-term partnerships allow us to adapt RISE materials to fit the unique needs and realities of each community, weaving them into existing education systems. By drawing on our partners’ deep insights and expertise, we ensure that RISE feels relevant, resonates culturally, and makes a real, lasting difference.
