Mission Statement
We believe that every low-income Latinx student is entitled to an equal opportunity to succeed in higher education and pursue the career of their choice to obtain social and economic mobility. Our mission is to improve outcomes for Latinx students and families in East San Jose by providing support services for college enrollment and persistence, preparing students and families through our career pathways program, and advocating for educational equity and systemic change.
About This Cause
Decreasing Barriers for Low-Income Latinx Students in the Educational Pipeline The Latino Education Advancement Foundation (LEAF) develops programs that increase the number of Latinx students who enroll, persist, and complete college and obtain economically mobile careers in Silicon Valley. The LEAF Center for College Success (LCCS) offers a structured approach to increasing college enrollment and retention for first-generation students of color. We provide essential resources and support services for Latinx students in East San Jose enrolling in a community college or 4-year institution. In brief, we mentor, guide, and empower first-generation students and their families to (1) build a college-going culture, (2) confidently navigate the college enrollment process, (3) persist through college, and (4) graduate with a clear career pathway. The LEAF Scholarship: The LCCS Scholarship is a template for success through which students are supported through the first two years of college. It has four key dimensions: College Support Services Hands-on guidance through the college application and enrollment process. Workshops tailored to financial aid, advocacy and success, career pathways and readiness, plus more. Mentorship Alumni of East San Jose High Schools currently in college or graduate school will support, guide, and encourage the current cohort of LEAF Scholars as they navigate college. Mentors are given a $1,000 stipend for their work. Parent Engagement A consistent, evidence-based parent engagement and family support program provides parents with tools and resources to advocate, support, and guide their students through college. A $250 stipend for every semester their child remains in college, mainly to target food insecurity persistence through the East San Jose community. Fiscal Support Provide a $2,000 scholarship to Class of 2021 graduates from East San Jose High Schools to support them through their first two years of college. The LEAF Scholarship will support students throughout this summer and during their first and second year of college. We have recruited and supported 150 students to receive our scholarship and onboarded to the LCCS Scholarship Program.
