Mission Statement

The Maddie Potts Foundation was established in November of 2017, less than 2 months after Maddie's sudden death on the soccer field of an unknown brain aneurysm. This 501(c)(3) foundation was founded in order to carry on Maddie's legacy of kindness, compassion, hard work, inclusive leadership and perseverance, aka Maddie Mentality. We look forward to giving back to the community each year with scholarships, facility upgrades and opportunities for individuals with disabilities. We also focus on providing opportunities of education for parents, coaches and the community regarding the importance of Positive Coaching for lifelong learning.

About This Cause

The Maddie Potts Foundation was established in November of 2017, less than 2 months after Maddie's sudden death on the soccer field of an unknown brain aneurysm. Maddie was 17, a senior and Captain of both her Soccer and Lacrosse teams and a leader on her Indoor track team. She was lining up to take a free kick during a home soccer game on 9/23/17 when she ultimately died on the field in front of her team, coaches, friends, fans, 13 year old sister and her father, who was filming the game for college. This 501(c)(3) foundation was founded in order to carry on Maddie's legacy of kindness, compassion, hard work, inclusive leadership and perseverance, aka Maddie Mentality. She was known by all she came in contact with as being Mentally tough, Accepting, Driven, Determined, Inclusive and had superior Emotional control, (MADDIE) under the most difficult of circumstances. She Persevered through anything that came her way, had Outstanding coach ability, Trust worthy and always put her Team first. She has received many Sportsmanship awards (POTTS) and the RI State Soccer Officials changed their annual award to "The Maddie Potts Sportsmanship Award" within weeks of her death. She was then inducted into the State Soccer Hall of Fame and prior to her death she earned Female Athlete of the Year for her school. Maddie was a leader in VAASA - "Varsity Athletes Against Substance Abuse and was ironically an incredible artist as well. She was in the process of starting a mural club for school to help build on these skills and opportunities for all. Most importantly, Maddie was known to be "Everyone's first friend." She reached out to the new kids in the school or the team, worked tirelessly to find ways to help empower those around her and tried equally hard to keep the focus off of herself. Despite what seemed to be so many strong outgoing characteristics, Maddie was ultimately shy and preferred to avoid the spotlight. We look forward to giving back to the community each year with art, athletic and unified scholarships and awards, facility upgrades including a memorial field house to include a home and visitors locker room, and officials and athletic training room, indoor concessions, indoor bathrooms and a central atrium to represent all that Maddie stood for to her teams, friends, coaches and the community that has been devastated by her loss. We hope to use this to set an example to younger kids to help them represent similar qualities of inclusion, perseverance and community. We will build on opportunities for unified athletes and others with disabilities and one day hope to build The Maddie Potts Indoor Track and Practice Facility. Maddie knew the importance of practice and team building and this is a characteristic that needs to be fostered in all students to help with lifetime skills and relationships. Though a brain aneurysm defined Maddie's death, it did not define her life. She did that all by herself by living with Maddie Mentality. Thank you.
