Mission Statement

Mission: To safeguard and enhance rhino populations to translocate parent stock and breeders to other protected areas within Zimbabwe and surrounding countries in Africa

About This Cause

Zimbabwe Rhino Project is the representation of an on-the-ground, anti-poaching unit, ATS. It is an award winning* rhino protection, anti-poaching and illegal wildlife anti-trafficking, wildlife conservation and security organization in Zimbabwe’s, Savé Valley Conservancy, (SVC), one of the largest private game reserves in Africa. It is the contracted team that covers over 2,500 kms2 of wildlife habitat, and a critical stronghold for rhino, harbouring 25% of Zimbabwe’s black rhino. ATS is regarded to have created one of the best operating Malinois canine units in Southern Africa. Trained to bite the right arm, to disempower the shooter or weapon handler, the dogs work off lead and respond to silent signals with their ranger team. On poacher reactions, they run up to 25kms on detection, after which they are replaced by a fresh unit, via radio / vehicle connection. There are 11 Malinois working in the field. Since its inception, ATS has been responsible for the dismantling of many notorious rhino poaching syndicates and middlemen, with an accumulative over 180 years in prison sentencing. In 4 years alone, there have been 29 rhino poachers apprehended. ATS has cultivated a very strong intelligence network within the communities, this has contributed to at least 80% of the anti-poaching successes. On the 25 August 2021, Bryce Clemence, co-founder of ATS, was awarded Best Game Ranger in Africa, by the Game Rangers Association of Africa, for the Rhino Conservation Awards. These awards recognise excellence and unity in the field of wildlife management. The ATS Head Rhino Monitor, Givemore Bako was given special mention for his dedicated duties to rhino. ATS was brought in to the SVC area, in 2012, when a staggering amount of poaching saw 1 rhino killed every week in the SVC, for 10 consecutive weeks. Under this protection, the black rhino population in SVC has seen a growth rate of 7.6% year on year, and a 10% increase year on year of white rhino, which is exceptional. This has seen to fruition, the overriding goal, underpinning all activity of ATS for 9 years in SVC, in July 2021, the translocation of 4 black rhino to Gonarezhou National Park. A regeneration program deemed a monumental success for conservation for the whole of Zimbabwe.
