Mission Statement
We aim to liberate underprivileged and marginalized children from illiteracy, poverty, and poor health.
About This Cause
Founded in 2018 by Huldah Abraham, Manavar’s purpose is to offer impoverished children support and help them thrive by tackling three primary problem areas: education, ill health, and poverty. Active in India and Sri Lanka, Manavar offers after-school tutoring centers, health programs, and food drives for children and families in need. Global dropout rates continue to increase. In rural areas, nearly 40% of children drop out of schools before they reach the eighth grade. We attribute this to lack of after-school support from peers or parents, and unavailability of professional support in rural places. This has been an ongoing problem for several decades. Unfortunately, rural areas are often overlooked. Left without help and supervision, children take to the streets and fall into patterns of delinquent behavior. Manavar helps curb learned delinquent behavior by filling the after-school gap. Our vision through tutoring centers is to help disadvantaged children in rural areas stay in school and provide them with leadership development. By tackling childhood education, we hope to help alleviate poverty, child labor, and early marriage for girls, as well as illicit social behavior and human trafficking. We organize and operate P2P learning and leadership development in our after-school program. Our programs have structure: we group the students according to their classes or years and guide them towards peer-to-peer learning. We also identify gifted students among each group and assign an accountability leader for the group, while professional teachers facilitate the experience. We don’t just focus on homework; we also concentrate on the reading and writing skills of every child. As encouragement, we provide a snack or light dinner so that no one is learning on an empty stomach. Currently, we have 17 centers assisting 557 children, from 5th grade to 12th grade. On the side of the poverty, Global poverty rates have been cut by over half since 2000, but the Coronovirus pandemic upended the status quo. The projected impact of the pandemic is 420 million — 580 million people living in poverty. About 265 million people around the world were forecasted to face acute starvation by the end of 2020. The World Food Program estimated that 300,000 deaths could occur per day due to the resulting “hunger pandemic.” Poverty, which all too often results in hunger and malnutrition, limits access to education and healthcare. We feed the poor and the elderly who are hungry in underprivileged neighborhoods. Improved health improves learning. So we help the children and community stay healthy. Manavar has established a pilot program to provide lifestyle counseling and preventative care measures to those who don’t have health care access. A professional community nurse was appointed to provide education, monitoring, and counseling with the provision of consulting medical doctors. The pilot program is set in Mettupalayam, near Tambaram, Tamil Nadu. We intend to serve many villages all around it. We run road-side preventative care clinics once every week in different villages. The following services are provided: Health Screenings Checkups Patient Counseling Thus we provide comprehensive service of feeding, healing and educating. One of these support the other.
