Mission Statement
CREA was established in 2013 by María Guadalupe Martínez, with a mission to empower the Latino immigrant community of New York City by connecting adult students and their families to education, community resources, and pathways for socioeconomic mobility.
About This Cause
Each year, CREA offers 33 classes to approximately 300 adult students originating from 12 different countries. CREA's classes are offered in Spanish and English and cover various topics, including adult basic education, ESL, high school equivalency (GED), immigration, and computer skills. The Mexican Consulate recognizes CREA as a “Plaza Comunitaria” or community place that utilizes an adult basic education curriculum developed by Mexico’s National Institute for Adult Education. In addition to classes, CREA offers a reading club, monthly workshops, Cultural Space seminars, field trips, a women’s club, exercise classes, jewelry classes, cultural events, and direct resources like emergency food distributions. CREA works actively to provide education services, community resources, and referrals in New York City in collaboration with the Mexican Consulate, NYC CBOs, domestic and international educational institutions, local businesses, corporate partners, and religious organizations. These partnerships serve as vital opportunities for these entities to refer students to our classes and services, as well as opportunities for these institutions to distribute resources at a community level. Institutional partners include CUNY Lehman College’s Mexican Studies Institute through their Educational Opportunities Initiative and the CUNY Language Immersion Progam (CLIP), which connects CREA students to college, as well as Mexico’s Universidad Iberoamerica which places interns into volunteer and teaching positions. Recent partners in providing direct services and educational workshops have included Catholic Charities, the NYC Department of Health, the Hispanic Federation, and the Office of the Controller of the City of New York. Excitingly, in October 2023, CREA became a member of the advocacy coalition Fuerza Migrante as their first Plaza Comunitaria. Fuerza Migrante supports Mexican migrants and Mexican Americans in Mexico and the United States.
