BTW 125

HOUSTON, Texas, 77206 United States

Mission Statement

This Group was organized to work together with the community to provide services to people needing assistance, and encouragement through positive leadership, to promote educational development, relief to the indigent, distressed , underprivileged and those combating community deterioration. We are in addition planning to purchase a replica of the Booker T. Washington "Lifting the Veil of Ignorance" statue from Tuskegee University to stand as a beacon of enlightenment for this community. But beyond that, it is our goal to restore BTW to the greatness and powerhouse that once was Washington High. Through mentorship, tutors, onsite leadership programs we plan to bring back to BTW what budget cuts and state funding fails have taken away.

About This Cause

Our school is making history this year as we celebrate 125 years of academic excellence and achievement! Celebrating this tremendous milestone is a tribute to the many distinguished educators, staff, and former students throughout our city, state and nation that have served or graduated from our historic high school. YOU ALREADY KNOW: Our school was established in 1893 as Colored High School in Fourth Ward and is recognized as being the first school for African Americans in Houston, Texas. YOU MIGHT HAVE HEARD: In October, there are activities and events planned to memorialize our proud heritage including a BTW Family Reunion Parade on October 13 followed by Homecoming activities during the week of October 15, and the Homecoming Game on Friday, October 19. NOW HEAR THIS: On Saturday, October 20, 2018 we will culminate our Homecoming celebration with a BTW125 GRAND GALA at the HILTON AMERICAS-HOUSTON HOTEL, 1600 Lamar Street in Houston, Texas. Reservations for the Grand Gala are $75.00, VIP Reception/Ticket, $125. Tickets are currently available on BTW125.ticketleap.com. Detailed information regarding souvenir booklet ads and sponsorship opportunities is attached. BTW125 is a tax exempt 501(c)3 organization. Proceeds from the Grand Gala will be used to purchase a replica of the 1922 “Lifting the Veil of Ignorance” monument to be placed in front of our newly constructed school. This statue will stand as a symbol of pride to our school’s 125 years of history and to honor our continued commitment to the legacy that Dr. Booker T. Washington, famed educator, provided to the field of education. Eagle support is needed at ALL events! Your help is needed to get the WORD OUT! Your congratulatory ads are needed to fill our historical Souvenir Booklet. Come on, Eagles! Let’s “DO THIS” and show our city, our state, and our nation that the land of ROYAL BLUE & GOLD is 125 years strong and “still kickin’. Please contact committee members Lorraine Gibbs @ 832 880-1777, John Gibbs 713 298-1772, Pam Johnson 713 301-3573 or Langston Knowles 713 410-8837 if additional information is needed.
