Mission Statement
West Side Arts Un, Limited will honor the history of the State Theater by establishing a creative platform for the present and acting as a catalyst for aspiring creatives in Milwaukee. By providing a space for underserved populations, we will cultivate a community of artists focused on love, literacy, appreciation, and excellence around modern music production, performance and professional development.
About This Cause
THE NEW STATE, an all-ages music hub, is a phased development consisting of a Music Park, an adjoining Cafe building, and a likewise adjoining Main Music Hub building (formerly the historic State Theater). THE NEW STATE is ideally positioned in Milwaukee’s centrally located Near West Side on State Street between 26th and 27th Streets. The Main Music Hub will contain leading edge production studios, retail space for local artists, a 400+ seat performance venue, and a resident non-profit operation (WSAU) for instruction and mentoring clients, especially the young, to help turn their dreams, talents, and ambitions into careers/life-long practices. An outstanding, beautiful physical anchor for Milwaukee’s Near West Side. A sense of history; creation of a Place. A mix of uses that multiplies community benefits by accelerating development, economic vitality, and especially by benefitting the community’s youth. A safe, friendly, and exciting place to be. A vital tool giving wings to an at-risk population by enabling personal/economic growth. Key Accomplishments Acquired State Theater building/vacant land plus a building to house Café. Performed environmental remediation, roof repairs, demolition, masonry restoration. Funded operations for 2018-2021…Created Youth Committee for events, curriculum development, and self-marketing. Received grants & donations from the City of Milwaukee, Milwaukee Arts Board, Historic Concordia Neighbors, HUD, Brew City Match, Board members, Imagine MKE, Carvd N Stone, Saint A, Near West Side Partners, Greater Milwaukee Corp, Facebook, Various corporate & non-profit partners, and numerous individuals. Received loans from Wisconsin Preservation Fund and several WSAU Board members. Implemented volunteer events, music events, a virtual music talent show. Created phased development concept/budget. Selected development team. Created financial management framework. Developed schematic designs and visual representations. Obtained funding for roofing, demolition, and exterior remodeling to the Café. Obtained total funding for Music Park construction/landscape. Developed strategic fundraising concept. Initiated strategic Board expansion. Next Steps Build Music Park in Spring 2022. Build and open Café in Fall 2022. Start construction of the Main Music Hub historic preservation/design work in Spring 2023.
