Mission Statement
Build Smart Villages and foster growth by empowering rural communities in India through the employment of digital technologies and an open innovation platform.
About This Cause
Smart Village Movement is a registered NGO in alliance with UC Berkeley HAAS School of Business that develops and uses open innovation platforms to aid rural economic development. The alleviation of rural poverty is one of the defining challenges of our time. About 3.4 billion rural people around the world do not have access to the basic means and infrastructure that enable participation in global markets. We work with governments, global corporations, and universities to pilot programs that enable rural people to provide for themselves through entrepreneurship, job training, and onboarding them to open innovation platforms. SVM facilitates the establishment of infrastructure, health services, education, and livelihood assistance that precedes the villagers' successful participation in national and global markets. As of 2021, Smart Village Movement has established Pilot Programs in 3 Indian states- Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, and Meghalaya consisting of about 800 villages. We integrate technology with indigenous practices in order to address the concerns of villagers and create economic, social, and environmental change. The 8 Verticals we focus on: Health Care Connectivity Education Energy Livelihood Agriculture Sanitation How We Do It- Triple Helix Model: Until Smart Village Movement was established, Governments, Academia, and Corporates all worked towards rural socio-economic development in silos and investments did not yield sustainable results. Great ideas don't get implemented until collaborative effort and investment are established. The triple-helix model involves the equal participation of government, academia, and business. Many times the three entities work in silos hampering knowledge flow and development. Here the Smart Village Movement acts as a mediator for all the three to come together and co-innovate with the villagers, optimal solutions suited to their region. SVM facilitates this collaboration with UC Berkeley's Open Innovation Platform (https://platform.smartvillagemovement.org/main). Projects and processes are vetted by all stakeholders, implementation and evaluation plans are documented and future funding and sustainability are established. Our Ethos: OPEN INNOVATION We provide a platform for companies from various sectors to come together and share their intellectual properties (Ideas and tools) amongst each other in order to solve our common goal. CO-INNOVATION Using the intellectual property being shared, SVM formulates solutions for challenges in respective verticals using the services each company has to provide. COLLABORATION We organize the companies together in an eco-system with the authorization of the respective governments and manage the ecosystem where each companies services compliments the others in a harmonious chain. EMPOWERMENT Our Open Innovation approach integrates technology and indigenous rural practices to generate sustainable revenue for the constituents, thus increasing the overall standard of living and quality of life, simultaneously creating economic, social, and environmental value. Empowering underserved communities in rural India and beyond, by connecting them to open innovation platforms is the guiding principle for our team at Smart Village Movement NGO. One of the driving forces of the Smart Village Movement’s alliance with UC Berkeley’s Center for Growth Markets is the shared responsibility to facilitate sustainable development by integrating indigenous practices with modern technology and business innovation. SVM looks forward to curating robust platforms to allow policymakers, industry leaders, and research institutions to think bigger and better for enduring paradigm shifts. With the ongoing support of governing bodies, enterprises, and the individual determination and generosity of philanthropists, we continue to establish distinct channels to facilitate business value propositions in the rural world.
