To transform community wellness in Fort Bend County through literacy, health, and wellness programs.
About This Cause
Fort Bend Care Center seeks to improve Fort Bend County's Wellness through Literacy, Health, spiritual and Wellness Programs As of 2017, Fort Bend County's population is 765,000 and the County reflects a diverse population with 33.1% White, 24.5% Hispanic, 20.5% Asian and 20.3% Black. The Asian-American population nearly quadrupled in size between 2000 and 2017, and the Hispanic and Black populations more than doubled. The immigrant population continues to grow in the County. (ref. source: www.understandinghouston.org) Fort Bend Care Center seeks to improve community wellness and address these key community needs: - 24% of people in Fort Bend County having limited English proficiency - 8.2% of the population in Fort Bend County living in poverty - 30% of households in Fort Bend County struggle to afford basic necessities - 44% of the census blocks in Fort Bend County are in the lowest quartile for Health Literacy Levels Literacy & Education To improve community wellness through literacy, we provide English as a Second Language Class for all English Level O - 5. on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. To accommodate our neighbors' busy work schedule, we also offer free English Learning Phone App for students to learn English outside classroom setting. Besides English classes, we provide weekly GED preparation Class and Finance Management Class. We also have weekly Citizenship Class for residents to learn about American history, civics, and English to prepare for their citizenship interview. Food Every month we host a monthly food fair serving 150-200 families and distributing about 10,000 pounds of fresh fruits, vegetables and healthy food to our neighbors each month. Health We partner with a Federal Qualified Health Center, AccessHealth and provide facility for the mobile clinic to offer medical service for our community, Monday to Friday. AccessHealth serves clients with or without health insurance. Once a year in the fall, we host health fair to offer free flu shots, health screenings and health education programs to our community. Therefore we seek opportunities to listen to our neighbors and develop relationships anchored in love, respect and dignity. We design our services based on their input, concerns and aspirations. Neighbor Participation & Leadership We believe that our neighbors can build upon their strengths to enrich their own lives and neighborhoods. Our goal is to enable neighbors’ participation and grow their leadership within the community. Community Collaboration We believe in community strengths and leveraging existing resources and assets. We will strive to collaborate with community networks, local government, churches, non-profit organizations, community leaders and neighbors to address community needs and promote partnership in community development.
