About This Cause
SENT Topeka: Transforming Communities, One Step at a Time Who We Are: SENT Topeka is a dedicated, non-religious, non-profit organization founded in April 2018, focused on holistic community development in Shawnee County, with a primary emphasis on the Hi-Crest neighborhood. Our mission is to walk intentionally beside our neighbors through loving relationships and strategic development to foster the holistic transformation of Shawnee County's neighborhoods. Our Mission: Education: Quality education and family support. Housing: Safe, affordable housing that fosters pride and stability. Community Health & Wellness: Accessible mental health, substance use disorder, and wellness services. Programs that address food insecurity, health, and well-being. Why Hi-Crest? Hi-Crest has historically been labeled an "intensive care" community due to: High poverty rates Low property values Limited access to essential services High crime rates Despite these challenges, SENT Topeka has been instrumental in helping the community progress. Yet, significant work remains to cement gains and continue rising. Key Community Stats: Poverty: 16% of children live in poverty, with higher rates among Black (27%) and Hispanic (22%) children. Housing: 85% of homes are renter-occupied, with 60-year-old housing stock. Education: The average Black kid in our community is slated to have a household income of $25k at the age of 35, and the average Hispanic kid $30k. Income: 46% of residents spend 30% or more of their income on rent, with 24% spending over 50%. Our Impact: Housing: Built the first new home in Hi-Crest in 60 years and Topeka’s first Net Zero House. Education: SENT Prep Academy can provide early childhood education to 80 children in a daycare desert. Community Health & Wellness: Offering individual and family therapy, trauma-informed training, and addiction services.Operating a low-barrier, client-choice pantry, providing flu shots, and offering community enrichment events. Goals, Objectives, and Evaluation Our Goal: For Hi-Crest to become a thriving community where all residents can be self-sufficient and reach their full potential. Objectives: Case Management: Families will develop personalized plans with measurable goals toward self-sufficiency. Mental Health: Reduce negative mental health symptoms and improve coping skills. Housing: Provide access to safe, affordable, and dignified housing. Education: Prepare children for successful adulthood. Collaboration is Key: Our partnerships with organizations like Washburn University, Kansas Health Foundation, Sunflower Foundation, Kansas Health Institute, Center for Public Partnerships and Research, Washburn Tech, K-State, and local public schools are critical to our success. Together, we've pioneered innovative solutions like Topeka's first Net Zero House and provided trauma-informed training to educators. Sustainability and Future Vision: Our Development team focuses on: Diversifying revenue streams Building new partnerships Expanding individual and corporate giving Planning a signature community fundraiser Our Approach: Through holistic case management, we provide wraparound services that support families at every step, gradually reducing assistance as they gain independence. Join Us: By supporting SENT Topeka, you become part of a transformative movement to revitalize one of Topeka’s most under-resourced neighborhoods. Together, we can change the narrative and create a thriving, self-sufficient community.
