Mission Statement
As an inspired group, the organization will journey together with extremely low-income persons who need housing, to acquire and provide home ownership through shared housing such as housing cooperatives, community land trusts, intentional communities, or co- habilitative through strategic housing and land development, education and advocacy to maintain and preserve affordable housing.
About This Cause
Higher Ground Abodes is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing stable housing and comprehensive support for college-enrolled young adults transitioning from foster care. Recognizing the disproportionate challenges these individuals face, we strive to create a foundation for their academic and personal success. Our mission centers on addressing the critical need for affordable housing and holistic support for foster youth, who are at a heightened risk of homelessness and face significant barriers to college completion. We believe that by providing a secure and supportive living environment, we can empower these young adults to achieve their educational goals and build sustainable futures. Our model combines cooperative living with a deed restriction to ensure long-term affordability. This approach allows us to manage properties effectively while empowering residents (Partners) to actively participate in decision-making and cost-saving measures. We implement the "Level Up" program, which provides Partners with: Stable Housing: A private bedroom in a community-oriented home. Financial Education: Ongoing training to develop financial literacy and independence. Life Skills Development: Access to professional guidance and resources. Community Governance: Participation in property management decisions. We are committed to addressing the social determinants of health by creating a supportive environment that fosters overall well-being. By empowering these young adults to achieve their educational and personal goals, we aim to break the cycle of instability and create lasting positive change. Higher Ground Abodes' approach is not only cost-effective, potentially saving taxpayers significant social costs, but also a replicable model for other communities. We are dedicated to demonstrating the viability of this approach and advocating for the needs of foster youth.
