Mission Statement

Mission: To accompany the people of the Maji District in SW Ethiopia as they pursue community development for the flourishing of mind, body and soul. Vision: Maji Development Coalition exists to express love and respect for the people of Maji District, Ethiopia. Partnering with like-minded individuals and churches in the United States, we deploy resources to make solar electricity, clean water, health care, and women’s self-help groups available to the poorest of the global poor in the largely forgotten Maji District (about 35,000 people).

About This Cause

Maji Development Coalition (MDC) is a young nonprofit organization that has been dramatically successful addressing stagnant development conditions in a remote and neglected corner of SW Ethiopia. In less than 5 years, MDC has made a name for itself with solar applications for healthcare, clean water pumping, women's development, rural home lighting, and the electrification of their district hospital with solar PV. The Maji District has a population of 34,000 and lies beyond the end of the national electric grid. MDC is also organizing single women raising children alone into self-help groups and co-ops to develop income producing projects on a local level. MDC works with and through community leaders and Ethiopian business people to bring development to ordinary citizens in a rural district. Working through our Ethiopian employees and business partners, we show our deep respect for the expertise and ingenuity of the Ethiopian people in helping themselves. We partner with leaders in Maji District’s government, communities and churches to identify needs and to fund and create development that improves the lives of all.
