Govern For America is a 501(c)(3) organization working to build the next generation of public sector leaders to create a more diverse, effective, and responsive government.
About This Cause
State and local governments are where we tackle our nation’s toughest challenges. From ending mass incarceration to expanding access to high-quality pre-K, this is where we see our governments in action. But our governments face a talent crisis – many of our leaders do not reflect the backgrounds and lived experience of our communities, while trust in our public institutions is at an all-time low. The next generation is frustrated with our political systems and passionate about social change, yet don't see government as the place to make their impact. With 30% of government employees eligible to retire within the next 5 years, state and local governments across the nation are struggling to attract the talent they need to serve our communities effectively. COVID-19 has accelerated these trends. The pandemic is stressing our public systems in unprecedented ways and has laid bare systemic inequities and failings in our systems. If we want to build policy designed around people and improve government outcomes, we need to work within our government systems to bring the voices and leadership of impacted communities into government to drive transformational change at scale. Now more than ever we need emerging leaders from all backgrounds to step up to do the work that matters, where it matters. Govern For America (GFA) is building the next generation of public sector leaders to create more diverse, effective, and responsive governments. Through a two-year paid fellowship, we connect recent graduates from diverse backgrounds into full-time government jobs and support them to improve and transform the systems we interact with on a daily basis. GFA bridges the gap between state governments and emerging leaders to fill skills gaps, improve government operations, drive more equitable policy outcomes, and ignite a lifetime of public sector leadership.
