DANIEL GERSON MEMORIAL FUND FOR THE ARTS

NEW YORK, New York, 10024 United States

Mission Statement

The Daniel Gerson Memorial Fund for the Arts has partnered with Reel Works, an organization that provides free filmmaking programs for underserved NYC teens. Daniel was a screenwriter best known for his work for Disney and Pixar movies such as Monsters, Inc., Monsters University, and Big Hero 6. So many people have keenly felt Dan’s absence since he lost his battle with brain cancer. Reel Works exemplifies the values that Dan held dear and we’re excited to help expand their life-changing programs. With your help, the money we raise will support Reel Works programming. Each $10,000 raised covers a student’s participation in the Narrative Lab. We hope to also be able to fund future animators and provide funding for Reel Works in-school programs in disadvantaged Brooklyn neighborhoods. Reel Works’ introductory after school program matches teens with professional filmmaker mentors to create short documentaries that are personal and powerful. Students then advance on to The Narrative Lab where they learn to write, produce, and direct original short films with the support of an individual mentor, as well as a dedicated staff. Students are equipped with the vital skills of literacy, leadership, and self-confidence they need to apply for internships, positioning them for future jobs in the film industry. We can think of no better way to celebrate Dan’s life than combining the key tenets of the way he lived. Dan was guided by his principles and cared deeply about inequalities in income and education. His love of film brought joy to people of all ages. And, of course, he was a New Yorker through and through. Our partnership with Reel Works will help transform lives as well as stand as a memorial to the things that Dan held dear. To honor his memory, we invite you to join us in making a tax-deductible donation to The Daniel Gerson Memorial Fund for the Arts.

About This Cause

On February 6th, 2019 we mark the third year since Daniel Gerson’s passing. So many people have keenly felt Dan’s absence since he lost his battle with brain cancer. To honor his memory, we invite you to join us in donating to the newly created Daniel Gerson Memorial Fund For the Arts. In 2019, our inaugural year of fundraising, we have partnered with Reel Works, an organization that provides free filmmaking programs for underserved NYC teens. The money we raise will support Reel Works programming, particularly students in the Narrative Lab. Each $10,000 raised covers a student’s participation. We hope to fund at least one student specifically interested in animation. Additionally, Reel Works provides in-school narrative workshops for middle schools in disadvantaged Brooklyn neighborhoods. We can think of no better way to celebrate Dan’s life than combining the key tenets of the way he lived. Dan was guided by his principles and cared deeply about inequalities in income and education. His love of film brought joy to people of all ages with his screenplays for movies such as Monsters, Inc., Monsters University, and Big Hero 6. And, of course, he was a New Yorker through and through. Reel Works exemplifies the values that Dan held dear and we’re excited to help expand their life-changing programs. We hope you will join us in honoring Dan’s legacy by making a tax-deductible donation to the Daniel Gerson Memorial Fund For the Arts. Board of Directors: Mary-Joan Gerson Dean S.
