Mission Statement
The Caleb Effect Foundation is a charitable organization dedicated to celebrating the life and love of Caleb Wile by performing acts of kindness in his memory and supporting SUDC awareness, advocating for research, and supporting those affected by Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood (SUDC).
About This Cause
Who is Caleb? Caleb Lennon Wile was borrowed from heaven on February 9th of 2014 and returned unexpectedly on May 2nd of 2016. At just two years old, he was our brilliant, little star. He knew all of his letters, colors, how to count to 20, and even how to spell his name. He was a bright light with a special sense for what people needed. He gave love freely to everyone he met and knew exactly how to infuse joy into each soul. Caleb never knew a stranger and never slowed down, except to look at the wheels of his "vroom vrooms" as he played on the floor. He smiled with his whole face and loved unconditionally with his whole heart. Perhaps he had already mastered life and was too pure for this world. What is The Caleb Effect? Shortly after losing Caleb, we started noticing positive things that only would’ve been possible because of him. People who never would’ve been in the same room together were peacefully gathered. Stories of playful ladybugs and miraculous rose sightings were happening to friends and family who knew nothing of each other’s experiences. People told us how Caleb made them more deliberate in spending more time with people they love and more patient when they normally would’ve lost their cool. Caleb made everyone realize that tomorrow really isn’t guaranteed and we all have to do our best to love each other as we are today. We started referring to this phenomenon as “The Caleb Effect," and the rest, as they say, is history. How are you sharing The Caleb Effect with others? After a year marking the number of months since we had last seen or kissed our sweet boy, we decided we would no longer pause on the worst day of our lives. Instead, every 9th of the month we remember Caleb's birth by choosing a cause and performing acts of kindness. We are "Nice on the 9th" in memory of the 9th of February, 2014, the day we received life's most perfect blessing. We share The Caleb Effect to celebrate our beautiful boy’s much too brief, but exceptionally full life and to spread awareness of SUDC. In this way we don't allow the darkness of our grief to overshadow the brightest rays that are still shining from Caleb’s life. What led you to become a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization? We began by giving out Caleb’s favorite toy (Hot Wheels AKA “vroom vrooms”) to children and doing other random acts of kindness in his memory whenever we felt Caleb nudging us. After only a few months of celebrating Nice on the 9th, we were surprised by a local news station. They awarded The Caleb Effect with $400 as part of their "Pay It 4Ward" program recognizing those making a positive impact in the community. Caleb's mom was preparing for another setback as her office was shutting their doors and wasn't sure what was going to be next. After seeing the profound influence Caleb had on perfect strangers, Caleb's parents felt led to create something that extended beyond their family. They knew they wanted every penny to be used in a way that would continue to ensure Caleb's life would live on and The Caleb Effect could be introduced to the world. On May 9th, 2018, the first anniversary of the first Nice on the 9th, The Caleb Effect became an official 501(c)(3) organization and is still run entirely by volunteers. What kinds of causes do you support? While we are being Nice on the 9th each month, we educate the public on SUDC and the SUDC Foundation. We have provided backpacks full of supplies for children in foster care, organized a volunteer day at the local food bank and farm sanctuary, purchased supplies for teachers, senior citizens, mental health organizations, first responders, those experiencing homelessness, kids with special medical needs, grief support groups, shelter animals, refugees, disaster agencies, the military, our local children’s hospital and more! A portion of every dollar also goes to fund research and support others affected by SUDC. Our goal is for Caleb’s radiant, contagiously happy life to shine brighter than our sadness, to spread love into the vast darkness and bring light into every crevice of our shattered, grieving hearts. We hope you will join us and share your pictures and stories on our website or social media pages to let us know how Caleb influenced you. Thank you for your generosity. We are grateful to Benevity and their partners and hope The Caleb Effect leaves imprints on your heart now and always.
