DAUGHTERS BEYOND INCARCERATION

Mission Statement

Daughters Beyond Incarceration’s plan is to attack mass incarceration issues by eliminating barriers that affect the communication gap between incarcerated parents and daughters. Our vision is for every daughter with an incarcerated parent to live a healthy stable life and have a strong, positive, relationship with her parent during and after incarceration.

About This Cause

Daughters Beyond Incarceration has supported over 70 girls who are growing up fatherless either due to their father being deceased or incarcerated. DBI is a program unlike any other as two women lead it with first-hand experience of growing up with an incarcerated dad. DBI is our solution to breaking the cycle of poverty and crime amongst daughters with incarcerated fathers by advocating for girls with incarcerated dads and building strong parent-to-child relationships between them – through education, mentorship, and support. Dominque Jones founded DBI, and her incarcerated father, Charles Brown, Jr. Charles was sentenced to life in April 1982. Dominque was born seven months later and has spent her entire life with her father behind bars. Robresha “Bree” Anderson, Co - Founder, is the daughter of Robert Jones. Robert was sentenced to life without parole and was freed in November 2015 after 23 1/2 years of incarceration (and exonerated in January 2017) by Innocence Project New Orleans (IPNO). Robresha was born while Robert was awaiting trial and locked up – she spent 23 years of her life with her dad behind bars. While Charles, (Dominque’s dad) and Robert (Bree’s dad) were incarcerated, the two became very close friends and Charles became inmate counsel and mentor to Robert. Daughters Beyond Incarceration (DBI). DBI works to create social change for all children impacted by parental incarceration by implementing policies that assist with overcoming adverse childhood experiences. As children of incarcerated parents, the group’s leaders Dominque and Bree advocate for children with incarcerated parents by preparing them to speak on panels as experts in the field of trauma due to parental incarceration. In September of 2019, DBI was featured on dateline NBC in an article title: The Definition of Resilience. On June 11, 2020 DBI effectively wrote and passed Louisiana Act 284 which creates The Louisiana Council for Children of Incarcerated Parents, housed within the Office of the Governor, to investigate, analyze, and propose comprehensive reforms for children of incarcerated parents. DBI has an undying need to support all children with an incarcerated parent by instilling them with self-love and self-empowerment. In October of 2019, we launched a set of policy recommendations to assist with developing and shaping policy reform for us. For this reason, we work to enhance families impacted by incarceration through an each-one-teach-one method that has a holistic lens to transform the entire family. DBI currently provides support and programming to 70 girls with incarcerated fathers. DBI also provides support to the girls caregivers when needed. DBI ensures that our girls' physical, social, and emotional needs are met as we are continuing our path to total healing. Due to Covid-19, DBI’s programming was virtual for much of 2020. Recently, DBI has been able to have in-person meeting with smaller groups – enabling us to better support our girls as it is often to truly understand what they need when only communicating virtually. Girls between the ages of 8-18 meet once a month grouped by designated age groups. We utilize this time to educate our girls about what is happening with our legislative bills while working through our curriculum. Our youth professional development program works to model the change we want to see through an each one-teach-one style of training. Through our youth professional development, we introduce our mentees to workforce development, life skills and youth advocacy development.
