Mission Statement
Helping Hands for Puerto Rico’s mission is to partner with leaders & military veterans of Puerto Rico and continental United States, for disaster relief services and the development of educational programs in disaster relief, emergency services, agriculture, the arts, and entrepreneurship.
About This Cause
Helping Hands for Puerto Rico is a Veteran owned non-profit organization that was founded as a result of the natural disasters in 2017, Hurricanes Irma and Maria. The founders are former Town Supervisor of Monroe, NY Harley Doles, the Honorable Maria Vazquez-Doles a Chief Justice of NYS Supreme Court, former Orange County, NY Health Commissioner Dr. Eli Avila MD, JD, MPH, FCLM, community leader Ruben Estrada and Army Veteran Raymond Collazo. Since it's inception, Helping Hands for Puerto Rico has worked in collaboration with other non-profits and supported them in the rehabilitation of over three hundred homes throughout Puerto Rico, raised approximately $75,000 worth of solar lanterns through LuminAID, provided temporary medical services in Vieques after the Hurricanes for citizens, and are currently creating disaster relief community centers with various educational programs. The non-profit organization financially facilitates the cause of other smaller, grassroots non-profit organizations throughout Puerto Rico that fit within the mission scope. The development of disaster relief and community centers using abandoned schools is an initiative replicable in municipalities across Puerto Rico. It is extremely important that abandoned schools be rehabilitated to serve their community and community leaders, as well as other non-profit organizations, are empowered. A vital aspect of the HH4PR vision is to promote self-sufficiency and resiliency through education.
