Mission Statement

Bay City News is the backbone of the regional news ecosystem, covering underserved communities and distributing fact-based journalism through a network of media partners, government and private sector influencers, and residents with timely and trustworthy information about the greater SF Bay Area.

About This Cause

Bay City News Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that was established to provide coverage of the people, places and issues in the greater S.F. Bay Area that deserve more attention. We focus on public-service, community journalism with deeper reporting on core areas such as arts, equity, local news, inspiring stories, health and data. - We hire reporters and editors to conduct on-the-ground local news reporting that fills the geographic and topical gaps left by legacy media companies that are facing severe staffing cuts. Our team’s work is then featured on our ad-free site, LocalNewsMatters.org, where we are publishing stories, photos, data and other content that is not adequately covered by commercial media. Richer storytelling results from this multi-media platform. - We build partnerships with other media to amplify excellent and important work. Our collaborators have included Solutions Journalism Network, ProPublica Local, CalMatters, EdSource, USC Annenberg Center for Health Journalism, Stanford’s Big Local News and others who share our values and recognize the benefits of partnering toward a common goal. Our affiliated newswire distributes fact-based news about the region to dozens of other media outlets, distributing our work on broadcast, newspaper and digital platforms. - We test new technology so as to grow our capacity to gather and distribute news in the way consumers want to get it. Our primary work in this area is currently being done through our collaboration with Newspack for our public-facing website, Big Local News and Agenda Watch at Stanford for data projects, Microsoft for data visualizations and multi-media journalism, Bloom for geotagging and mapping, and Catchlight for photography. We also partner with Starling Lab on a photo authentication project to combat misinformation and disinformation. - We mentor the next generation of journalists, providing the types of internships and training that put them on a solid professional path toward their careers. Local campuses with whom we currently partner in this venture include San Francisco State, San Jose State, Stanford, UC Berkeley, CUNY, Columbia, Northwestern and programs spearheaded by organizations like the Emma Bowen Foundation and Dow Jones News Fund. We are also the media partner for journalism programs at high schools in Contra Costa County.
