Mission Statement

Our mission is to increase wildfire personnel from non-traditional and underrepresented communities, providing them the training, skills, resources, and experiences needed to secure gainful employment.

About This Cause

The Forestry and Fire Recruitment Program (FFRP) is a dba program of UAFFP and a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides career support to thousands of individuals who have been in, or are returning home from, California’s Conservation Camps (i.e. Fire Camp) and are interested in careers in the wildland and forestry sector after a five-month certification process as wildland officials. FFRP was founded in 2015 as a volunteer organization by two past Fire Camp residents who were some of fortunate few able to attain work as professionals within the wildland and forestry sector after their release. After several years fighting wildfires professionally with CAL FIRE and the US Forest Service (USFS), they started FFRP our of a need to help other past and current Fire Camp residents find pathways to careers in fire based on their own live experiences. FFRP has a proven track record of providing family-sustaining career opportunities in firefighting and related fields to people with past convictions. Without support, the barriers to this sector can be insurmountable as past convictions often disqualify firefighters from municipal and county firefighting jobs. Since our founding, FFRP has placed more than 140 people in jobs thought to be previously inaccessible to people with past convictions. Our model is designed to directly engage these trained and experienced incarcerated firefighters to become leaders in Fire Prevention upon their release by deploying fire prevention crews that serve as transitional training mechanisms. We do this by visiting every Camp and offering education and motivation about career pathways in fire and fire prevention. Post-release we provide reentry supports, training, and certifications to enter the profession and offer paid on-the-job training while participants work on our fire prevention / suppression crews. While our recruitment and referral activities take place statewide, FFRP’s programming takes place in Southern California and will launch in the Bay Area in 2022.
