About This Cause
Safe Haven was founded in 2018 after the director lost her brother to a heroin overdose. This event was the catalyst needed to start services in Orange County. A group of like minded community members came together and founded Safe Haven in June 2018. We opened our doors at our first location February 1st, 2019. Since then, we have only grown and expanded with the support of the community, other local organizations, and state leaders. We moved to a new location in January 2020, expanding our services and ability to serve more people. We moved again in July 2023 to a larger location and a space to call our own. What started as simply an Engagement Center for information, quickly morphed into becoming a Regional Recovery Hub serving 9 southern Indiana counties: Lawrence, Orange, Crawford, Dubois, Washington, Martin, Pike, Daviess, and Perry. We are also a Certified Recovery Community Organziation through DMHA. We offer peer support services with certified recovery coaches as well as a host of other services: Harm Reduction with Naloxone and fentanyl test strip distribution. NaloxBox outside of our location offers 24/7 free access to Naloxone and fentanyl test strips. We also offer free HIV and Hep C screenings. Social events to support recovery Educational events to spread awareness about treatment and recovery from SUD Meeting space to host peer support meetings such as NA, AA, and Celebrate Recovery Transportation program with 3 drivers and 2 company vehicles Social service support to help with employment, housing, food, etc. Our coaches are embedded in and working with 9 county jails and probation departments to ensure positive re-entry and successful recovery. We also network with local sober living homes to offer coaching and mentor support for the residents. Safe Haven regularly networks and collaborates with other local organizations to offer as many services as possible including faith based groups and the medical community when Medication Assisted Treatment is needed. Safe Haven offers two programs specifically to our participants in the coaching program: Food access with a small food bank and providing feminine hygiene products to women in the Orange County, Indiana jail. Safe Haven is run by a volunteer board, 51% of which are in recovery from SUD themselves. All services through Safe Haven are offered free of charge. 2023 offers additional opportunities to expand our services with a grant received that will allow us to start a recovery house and bring in Intensive Outpatient Services to Orange County.
