Mission Statement

Whales of Guerrero transforms the relationship between people and nature through programs that inspire and empower.

About This Cause

Whales of Guerrero connects coastal communities in Mexico and around the world with nature through community-driven whale research, education and capacity building programs. By engaging communities deeply with science, we have cultivated a new generation of ocean protectors and whale lovers. We facilitate community-driven conservation in the fishing village of Barra de Potosí and throughout the southwest Pacific State of Guerrero, Mexico, pioneering a new approach to coastal protection that cultivates local leadership through citizen science, peer learning, and community outreach. We were founded in 2013, and after years of collaborative marine mammal research, the seeds of stewardship have taken root in our region. Now we want to help them bear fruit by galvanizing an emerging group of Fishery and Conservation Leaders who will lead the community toward long-term marine restoration and conservation. OUR VISION A thriving Barra de Potosí that serves as a model for community-driven marine conservation and responsible ecotourism. THEORY OF CHANGE We believe that local leadership is key to effective marine conservation; citizen science, peer learning and ecotourism development cultivate community stewards. OUR IMMEDIATE GOALS: -Empower and consolidate a group of Fishery and Conservation Leaders (FCL’s) to identify the steps they must take to save their sea, following a first-ever learning exchange to Baja California Sur. -Facilitate ongoing success for Guerrero as a new federally recognized zone for whale watching activities through training programs, monitoring and community organization and support activities and responsible ecotourism business development support. -Publish and present the results of our groundbreaking 1,600-hour whale and dolphin field survey at international conferences and in peer-reviewed science journals. -Connect local youth nature ambassadors with the local nature and foster leadership and communication skills that will enable them to guide the next generation toward environmental recovery. -Support Barra de Potosí’s committed young environmental ambassadors with a year-long hands-on science and environmental education program. -Generate new responsible ecotourism opportunities for men and women in Barra de Potosí -Awaken a love for nature in 2000+ local students each year and introduce them to the wild dolphins, whales and other incredible animals that are their neighbors through presentations and field research opportunities. -Integrate our science, capacity building and school programs into business, government and educational entities so that scientific research, guide training, and hands-on science education will be supported locally for generations. -Support the village in documenting their story and sharing it with their immediate, extended and global community through short documentaries and presentations in person and online.
