Mission Statement

ELSO’s mission is to teach and frame science and nature-based education through a lens that centers and elevates the stories, ways of knowing, individual needs, and lived experiences of Black and Brown communities.

About This Cause

ELSO Inc is a nationally recognized, Black-led organization focused on STEAMED (Science-Technology-Engineering-Arts-Math-Environment-Design) education. Created in 2015 by women of color, ELSO provides innovative, culturally affirming education and internship programs that invite youth of color to Experience Life Science Outdoors. Our programs build future science, math, art and design leaders by connecting BIPOC and LGBTQ+ participants to caring role models and mentors who offer their stories, journeys and professional pathways. ELSO programs include: - Wayfinders Summer Camp engages Black and Brown children and youth in adventurous outdoor recreation, environmental stewardship, and nature-based STEAMED spring and summer camps. - Wayfinders Camp Guide Training inspires the pursuit of STEAMED careers and promotes workforce and college readiness for BIPOC Camp Guides. We provide training on trauma informed care, culturally relevant education, implicit bias, and how to facilitate social justice conversations in ways that engage all ages and learning styles. - Youth Design Program fosters youth voice and self-determination by examining the built environment as a root cause of social injustice. Youth are paid to use design for justice. We partner with industry experts, schools and community groups to engage student cohorts throughout the school year, prioritizing youth with BIPOC identities. - Tappin Roots (TR) is an internship program in coalition with culturally specific organizations that offers paid work experience for Black identified high school youth. Tappin Roots uses storytelling, mentorship, career exploration, place-based learning and healing practices to bring young Black Oregonians closer to nature, and closer to their history.
