About This Cause

Reading Ready Pittsburgh (RRP) is a 501c3 non-profit organization supporting the healthy development of young children by increasing access to books and by encouraging significant family engagement through reading aloud in the home. Reading Ready Pittsburgh was formed in July of 2018 with a focus on the Steel Valley area and has since expanded from Munhall and Homestead to Braddock, Swissvale, Rankin, Wilkinsburg, Duquesne, McKeesport, and Clairton. The focus of our efforts has been in the Mon Valley, yet these efforts are continually expanding to other communities and children. Reading Ready Pittsburgh is a local affiliate of Raising a Reader (RAR), a nationally recognized program designed to help families of young children develop, practice, and maintain home literacy habits which we provide to 29 early childhood education sites, (including private childcares, Head Start, Early Head Start, Home visitors, and home childcare) serving in total approximately over 900 families. In addition, all the programs that are in session during the summer months are partnering with Reading Ready Pittsburgh to offer the Read With Me! Summer program in which each child receives 8 weeks of books and parent engagement materials. In the summer of 2022, RRP provided 1,720 high quality books to children through the Read With Me! summer program to 215 children total. Reading Ready Pittsburgh partners with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library (DPIL) to mail books to over 1,800 children in the Mon Valley and over 3500 children in the City of Pittsburgh. Every child enrolled in Dolly Parton's Imagination Library gets a book mailed to their home each month until the child turns five. For parents, Reading Ready Pittsburgh also provides Ready4K, a texting curriculum to 350 parents of small children. Collaborating with local early education and childcare professionals, RRP works to reach the family members to support their increased awareness and skill-building around engagement with their children’s early language/literacy development. We have worked tirelessly to make sure that parents have the tools they need to provide literacy-rich home environments. Reading Ready Pittsburgh employs well-trained staff who have backgrounds in early childhood education, teaching, and librarian services who are dedicated to empowering childcare professionals and families to routinely share books and language building activities with the children they work and live with. We make access to books easier, helping families build their home libraries for everyday use.
