Mission Statement
Provide a local solution by the local people for the local problem of the orphans and vulnerable children.
About This Cause
Alliance Care Now (formerly Orphan Care Ethiopia) is a philanthropic, not-for-profit organization with ONE Mission - To improve the lives of orphans in Ethiopia through advocacy, education, and the financial support of agencies and individuals fighting the orphan crisis on the ground. An estimated range of 5 million children live on the streets, in various government and private orphanages or are trapped in trafficking and child labor. Due to poverty, HIV, chronic illness and/or lack of women empowerment programs, there are 5 million vulnerable children ranging from infant to 18 years of age. International adoption was a partial remedy for years, but the Ethiopian Parliament recently banned such adoptions. This caused hundreds of private orphanages to have to close their doors due to a lack of funding. The children in these private orphanages were turned onto the streets or placed in government orphanages which were already at maximum capacity creating environments that struggled to provide basic and emotional needs. Over the last five years (2019-2023), Alliance Care Now (ACN), formerly Orphan Care Ethiopia, has worked with Ethiopian leaders and community volunteers in Addis Ababa to create innovative programs, pilot them, and document their success in changing the lives of vulnerable children. The strategic programs include childcare centers, afterschool programs, mentoring moms and dads for abandoned children, job and internship training, medical care, and others. This movement has been fueled by the people of Ethiopia who are helping solve the problems of Ethiopia. The volunteers come from all sectors of the community, retired professionals, local moms, health care workers, small business leaders, and others. At the recent opening ceremony of the National Social Protection Conference in Addis Ababa, Her Excellency Ergogie Tesfaye (PhD), Minister of Women and Social Affairs, spoke of the pilot program, “It gives me great joy to see regular citizens participating in nation building in such impactful way by giving their time, energy, and experience for the betterment of the vulnerable in their community. Volunteer mentoring and after school programs are just two of the supplemental programs that bring the skills, expertise, and compassion of local volunteers to bear on the problems of poverty in their own communities. “ Because of the success of the pilot, the Ministry of Women and Social Affairs has agreed to expand the strategic program pilot and broaden the outreach to children across Addis and the nation. To accomplish this, the Ministry will use a three-way collaboration model to include partnerships with the Ethiopian government, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and community volunteers across Ethiopia. As a result, five million orphaned and vulnerable children will be served in one or more of the seven strategic programs in ten regions of Ethiopia over a five-year period. This is no small vision or task. It will require five million volunteers (or 500,000 volunteers in each of the ten regions) to be recruited, trained, and mobilized to provide these strategic program services. Fifty non-governmental organizations (NGOs), that are licensed by the Ethiopian government to serve orphans and vulnerable children, will run and oversee the strategic programs in each of the ten regions of Ethiopia. The NGOs also will recruit and train local volunteers and connect the volunteers to the needs of these children through the strategic programs. It is anticipated that this will be an ongoing effort, beyond the first five years, not only to address poverty reduction among vulnerable children but also to prevent further vulnerability of children and families across Ethiopia and beyond.
