Mission Statement

The American Journalism Project is the first-of-its-kind venture philanthropy investing in local civic news organizations. We’re on a mission to sustain and grow nonprofit and nonpartisan local newsrooms across the country. As thousands of communities lose their newspapers and look for a new approach to local news, we’re investing in digital-forward organizations that are governed by, sustained by and look like the public they serve. We believe every community deserves a fair and independent press they can trust.

About This Cause

The American Journalism Project was founded in 2019 with a vision for a thriving ecosystem of local, civic journalism that strengthens democracy in the U.S. By investing in civic news organizations (CNOs), the American Journalism Project is reigniting the spark behind local news — a public good and fundamental democratic institution. These news organizations are mission-driven, meaning they work to fill the critical information needs of their communities and build a new generation of civic engagement. Our venture philanthropy approach is designed to give CNOs the capital they need to achieve sustainable growth and bring back lessons for the entire field. With the help of generous supporters, we invest in nonpartisan newsrooms that hold the powerful accountable, combat disinformation, and deepen civic participation. Grantees come to us with ambitious plans to grow not only their revenue but how they serve their communities. While traditional journalism philanthropy focuses on funding reporting, our grants focus on sustainability: new business, technology, and fundraising capacity.
