Mission Statement

BuildSoccer was formed to build community through soccer. The first objective is to develop a soccer park where life-changing programs for kids, families and the region’s special needs community will be held. We’re committed to addressing the field inequity issue by building safe facilities where the community can bond through sport.

About This Cause

In order to provide unique programming that brings together women, children and individuals with special we need to have a safe facility. We are dedicated to building South Austin’s first soccer park—a fully lit, six-field endeavor in partnership with Marbridge, a residential community for adults with cognitive disabilities. The unique aspect of this partnership, however, is not simply an opportunity for kids of Austin to have a safe, well-lit place to exercise and play soccer, but it also makes a way for a budding collaboration between the soccer players, their families and Marbridge residents. The vision is to create a safe place and promote healthy living and community building, teaching children who participate what it means to be an active, healthy member of society and provide an opportunity to practice the life skills they need to be successful on and off the field. The hay fields (future site of the soccer complex) at the Marbridge campus are already home to more than 200 children who meet and play games each week, children whose families were previously driving a minimum of 45 minutes one way for their children to play a sport they love. “I have to be honest,” one parent said. “We really contemplated giving up soccer, which was a painful discussion considering how much our son loves soccer and how close we’ve become to many of the families we see every weekend. The fields at Marbridge were such a gift. The interaction with the residents at Marbridge was a special bonus, and so many of the kids look forward to their ‘cheering section’ each week.” For other families, the distance and cost have been insurmountable roadblocks for their children to participate in soccer programs. Despite the interest in bringing soccer to the Austin community (especially with the announcement of two professional soccer teams), the city maintains ZERO lighted soccer parks. Within Hays and Travis Counties, there are 50 miles of open space where a large majority of the population resides without access to a proper soccer park. Between San Marcos, a suburb south of Austin city limits, and Round Rock, a suburb north of Austin city limits, there are ZERO lighted youth soccer parks. Compared to other major metropolitan areas in Texas, the fastest growing city (according to Forbes Magazine) should better compare. When complete, the new soccer complex at Marbridge will include 6 fields (2 artificial, 4 natural grass), permanent lighting, concessions, proper restrooms, playground, walking paths, and ample well-lit parking. Finally, there will be a safe, well-lit soccer park that will serve thousands of children, families and special needs individuals in the Austin community. The cornerstone of BuildSoccer’s mission is to provide opportunities for people of all backgrounds and socioeconomic status to participate in soccer, which will be made possible through BuildSoccer’s scholarship program. The residents at Marbridge are also an integral part of the vision for the soccer complex at Marbridge Park. This includes a future hosting opportunity for Special Olympics soccer games and special opportunities for Marbridge residents through internships, paid working opportunities and more. The residents at Marbridge have already developed a special relationship with the kids who play soccer at their campus each week. The residents often come cheer on the teams as they play and high-five the kids as they leave the field. The kids, in turn, support residents by volunteering at Marbridge events, making cards for the residents and building special friendships. Through the development and construction of a new soccer complex, these relationships will flourish with long-term collaboration and community building.
