HELP A MOTHER OUT

OAKLAND, California, 94607-3745 United States

Mission Statement

Help a Mother Out® works to improve baby and family well being by increasing access to diapers for families in need. A family’s access to a reliable supply of clean diapers reduces the risk of infectious disease outbreaks, improves baby’s health and comfort, and enables baby’s participation in early care and education programs. Our vision is a day when every baby has a healthy supply of diapers.

About This Cause

Diapers cost between $80 and $100 per month. That’s $2,850 to diaper one child with regular changes until potty training–a huge expense for the over 5 million low-income families with young children living in the U.S. today. Public assistance programs like food stamps don’t cover diapers. Diapers give mothers and babies a chance. WHY DIAPERS? Health and Well-Being If a family can’t afford diapers, a baby may spend extended periods of time in a soiled or even re-used diaper. This can lead to serious health problems for baby and disease outbreaks for entire communities. Access to Education and Health Care A supply of clean diapers is required to attend most childcare programs. So without diapers, toddlers don’t get a fair start in their education. Self-Sufficiency When toddlers can’t go to childcare programs, adults remain under-employed. Something so basic as a diaper can actually have a big impact on a family’s ability to become financially self-sufficient. Help a Mother Out distributes diapers through two main methods: BAY AREA DIAPER BANK Established in 2009, Help a Mother Out's Bay Area Diaper Bank for community partners in the greater Bay Area region provides social workers with an innovative and vital way to meet the concrete needs of children, build trust with families, and offer additional support and services. Diapers are distributed to families in need exclusively through a network of community partners, including family resource centers, voluntary home visiting, facilitated parent support groups, homeless and foster children services, and public health departments. SAN FRANCISCO DIAPER BANK Help a Mother Out’s San Francisco Diaper Bank (SFDB), the nation's first and only diaper public assistance program. We established the program in 2015 and operate it through a partnership with San Francisco Human Services Agency. The SFDB serves approximately 1,400 eligible CalWORKs families with children under three years old, through a network of diaper distribution centers located throughout the city. Eligible children may receive up to 6 packages of diapers each month. CALIFORNIA DIAPER BANK Help a Mother Out’s California Diaper Bank provides one time diaper grants for disaster relief as well as diapers for organizations that do not have a diaper bank in their area.
