Mission Statement
KyleCares was founded in 2019 by the Johnson family after their son and brother, Kyle Johnson, a 19-year-old college student, died by suicide. KyleCares is dedicated to promoting open and honest communication about the mental health challenges experienced by teens and young adults in today’s society. Ultimately, we aim to eliminate student self-harm and suicide by creating school environments where students and their caregivers have the confidence and support to seek help without shame or hesitation.
About This Cause
Kyle, while living with mental illness himself, was an advocate for youth experiencing mental illness. He deeply understood the stigma surrounding mental health, and KyleCares works to fulfill Kyle’s wish to talk openly about mental health and suicide, bringing these conversations to the forefront of our school communities. We carry out our mission by: • Connecting schools with mental health resources and service providers • Facilitating long-term, comprehensive strategies to address student mental health • Funding school-based mental health education, awareness, and suicide prevention programs Over the past 5 years, KyleCares has provided programming and financial assistance to nearly 110 high schools and colleges throughout New England in the areas of mental health awareness and suicide prevention. From implementing student clubs who advocate around mental health, to providing training for educators on how to support teens grappling with their mental health, to convening experts, speakers, and facilitators to augment districts’ work to amplify the conversation about teen mental health, we partner with schools and students for long-term. In addition, we work with district administrative leaders to develop and implement an evidence-based, long term strategy for supporting the mental well-being of all students on the campus by strengthening programs and policies to meet industry best practice while focusing on the key areas of impact identified by subject matter experts in this field. We follow the schools' progress, collaborate to troubleshoot challenges, connect them with resources, and support them at each step of the journey to ensure their work to uplift and destigmatize mental health becomes a core part of their school and community culture. In addition to our year-round work, we host regional teen conferences which — combined — reach nearly 750 students from across New England annually. At these innovative conferences, one which takes place in Rhode Island and the other in Massachusetts at Gillette Stadium, we convene student mental health leaders for an inspiring day of learning, growth, and connection. Attendees hear from a keynote speaker, learn from a wide array of mental health experts around topics such as wellness strategies and coping skills, advocacy, healthy relationships, equity and inclusion, and more. The conferences are designed to inspire the students to take action at their schools and bust stigmas by engaging in thoughtful, open, and educational sessions to normalize the conversation about mental health and encourage help-seeking behaviors. The conferences are bigger than any one student or school effort — they are a representation of a critical movement to systematically address mental health, driven by students in support of their community of peers.
