Mission Statement

To create opportunity and transform communities by inspiring and encouraging growth through education, sports, and wellness.

About This Cause

Kalabash Academy is a 501c3 nonprofit organization headquartered in Portland, Oregon that operates educational and soccer academies in West Africa (Gambia). Our organization uses education and football (soccer) as a vehicle for social change in underserved communities. We look to tackle the root cause of poverty through a holistic and interconnected set of programs. The kids we serve do not have access to quality education nor sport opportunities. Therefore, the dream of even attending university feels out of reach without the role of Kalabash Academy. Our teachers and coaches raise our students to the levels of education they need to get scholarships to universities in Africa, Europe, and the United States. This opens a pathway to a better future--a future these youth bring back to their home communities, creating a positive cycle. Approach and Value: Identify talented youth around West Africa who demonstrate a commitment to learn and provide them with a fully residential academy that emphasizes a comprehensive education curriculum, elite football (soccer) training, and character development that is geared towards building impactful leaders. "Through education and the game of soccer there is an opportunity to prepare and develop young people for the challenges of life.” Clive Charles We have taken calculated steps in professionalizing and expanding on our already successful education and football (soccer) programs with the introduction of The Kalabash Medical Team. The Kalabash Medical Team is a bi-annual program for underserved populations. The team is a group of health care providers who bring free medical care to underserved populations in our international community. The medical team is made up of humanitarians of all ages, from teens to those in their 70s, mostly from the Pacific Northwest area. Approach: The team sets up a clinic at the Kalabash Academy facility in The Gambia and invites patients from the region to come for free primary care services. The team of 25 medical providers set up a station-based workflow, so patients visited each provider that is needed. All needed medical supplies are brought to The Gambia with the team. The Gambia, like most West African countries, is a low-income country with very limited access to health services. Close to 50% of the population lives below the national poverty line. Poverty is a major cause of poor health and a barrier to accessing health care. Because approximately 63% of West Africans are under 25 years old, youth are particularly impacted by these poor health care services. You can make a difference. Help us in our mission to build communities and encourage growth through education, sports and wellness.
