Mission Statement
Equal Origins is committed to establishing gender equity as a standard practice in coffee and cocoa. Our mission is to significantly improve the lives of farming women, their families, and communities. Women play a crucial role in producing coffee and cocoa, contributing between 40 to 80% of the labor needed to get coffee beans from the farm to your cup. Yet despite the industry’s significant investment in education and technical support to farmers, much of it still doesn’t reach or benefit women. Behind the scenes, hundreds of thousands of women continue to struggle in difficult conditions. Their contributions to coffee go unseen and often uncompensated. Women are coffee's hidden workforce. At Equal Origins, we're looking to change that. We are developing solutions: The Partnership for Gender Equity (doing business as Equal Origins) is a US-based not-for-profit (501c3) organization founded in 2015 under the Coffee Quality Institute (CQI) umbrella. Independent since 2019, we work globally to advance gender equity in coffee, cocoa, and beyond.
About This Cause
Equal Origins deploys three key strategies to highlight and uplift diverse voices, building stronger, more resilient communities and industry as a whole: 1. Build Capacity among Supply Chain Actors: Equal Origins works with Extension and Advisory Service (EAS) Providers and Producer Organizations, supporting their endeavors to enhance gender equity in sustainability and sourcing programs. 2. Build the Market for Gender Equity: Equal Origins’ tools create a foundation for a universal language and shared understanding of gender equity best practices. 3. Expand our Sphere of Influence: Equal Origins forges strategic alliances with partners to expand the reach of our programs and bolster our capacity to advocate for bold change.
