Mission Statement
Seattle Veterinary Outreach’s mission is to provide veterinary care to pets of under resourced communities and connect their owners to vital health, housing, and social service resources.
About This Cause
Seattle Veterinary Outreach: Supporting People and Pets at the Point of Need Seattle Veterinary Outreach (SVO) was founded on a deeply held belief: that all people—regardless of socioeconomic status—deserve the opportunity to experience the unconditional love between people and their pets. For those living unhoused or facing financial hardship, pets are more than companions—they are emotional lifelines, sources of comfort, protection, and family. Recognizing the vital role pets play in the lives of their owners, especially in times of crisis, SVO was created to ensure that access to veterinary care is not a privilege, but a right that contributes to the wellbeing of both humans and animals. Our Mission Seattle Veterinary Outreach's (SVO) mission is to provide free or low-cost veterinary care to the pets of people who are unhoused or low-income, while simultaneously addressing the broader social needs of their human companions. Through a unique mobile clinic model that brings care directly into underserved communities, we couple veterinary services with social services in order to promote holistic health, strengthen families, and uplift those living on the margins. At the heart of our work is the belief that human and animal welfare are firmly intertwined. When a pet receives care—whether it be vaccines, treatment for an infection, or care for a senior pet—their owner benefits as well: emotionally, psychologically, and in many cases, practically. Improved health outcomes for pets often open doors for their owners, such as meeting the requirements for housing programs that allow animals or simply finding peace of mind in a deeply unstable time. Mobile Outreach with Impact Unlike traditional clinics that require people to come to them, SVO takes a proactive approach. We operate mobile veterinary clinics that deliver essential care directly into neighborhoods and communities where it’s needed most. Each week, our team travels to various locations across Seattle and surrounding areas, bringing a full range of veterinary services into parking lots, food banks, shelter sites, and transitional housing communities. What makes SVO distinct is not just our mobile model, but our integrated care philosophy. We don’t just show up and vaccinate a dog or treat a cat’s dental pain—we stay to listen. We refer. We connect. At each clinic, our social worker collaborates with human service providers to offer supportive care, harm reduction supplies, behavioral health resources, and more. We work closely with organizations serving the unhoused population, making sure that crossover care is available for both people and pets. This wraparound approach ensures that the entire household—two-legged and four-legged—is supported in their journey toward stability. SVO goes out twice a week with our mobile veterinary team, partnering directly with human services organizations to deliver crossover care that addresses the interconnected needs of pets and their people. These joint outreach efforts mean that a pet might receive vaccines while their owner is accessing medical care, signing up for housing, or receiving support for substance use disorder or trauma. By embedding ourselves into the support ecosystem, we act as a bridge—often reaching individuals who haven’t yet connected with other service systems but will show up for their pets. Community-Centered and Relationship-Driven We work hard to build relationships in the community that expand the support for the pets of our unhoused and low-income neighbors. Whether we’re operating in encampments, food banks, urban villages, or church parking lots, we come as guests—always striving to build trust through consistency, empathy, and follow-through. Our work wouldn’t be possible without deep community collaboration. We partner with shelters, transitional housing providers, harm reduction organizations, healthcare nonprofits, housing case managers, and neighborhood groups to ensure we’re filling in service gaps rather than duplicating efforts. In each community, we aim to serve as a reliable partner, responsive to both emerging needs and long-term goals. These relationships also allow us to offer real-time response in critical situations. Whether it’s a blocked cat in need of emergency surgery, a dog with a fractured leg, or a family displaced by eviction, our nimble structure allows us to step in quickly, provide immediate care, and help families avoid the heartbreak of unnecessary pet surrender. We recognize that saving a pet can often mean saving a person’s hope—and that’s a responsibility we don’t take lightly. Equity, Access, and Compassion in Action Seattle Veterinary Outreach exists because access to veterinary care has long been a barrier for people facing poverty and homelessness. We seek to dismantle that barrier with a model rooted in compassion, cultural humility, and low-barrier access. There are no lengthy intake forms, no judgment, and no income verification hoops to jump through at our clinics. We believe people when they tell us they need help. And we provide it with dignity. Our services include: Preventive care (vaccinations, flea treatment, deworming, wellness exams) Urgent medical care (infections, wounds, pain management) Chronic condition management End-of-life support Pet ID tags and microchipping Social service referrals Harm reduction supplies Access to human medical services through our partner organizations We are also working to expand our capacity in specialty services like spay/neuter and dental care, either through mobile units or partnerships with established clinics that share our vision for equity in veterinary access. Building Resilience Together Seattle Veterinary Outreach is not just about treating illness—it’s about building resilience. By showing up consistently and providing care at the point of need, we help people rebuild trust in systems that may have failed them in the past. We empower pet owners to advocate for their animals, and in doing so, often discover a renewed sense of agency for themselves. We are proud to have provided care for thousands of animals throughout Seattle and Snohomish County, each one representing a family we’ve supported, a crisis we’ve helped ease, or a connection we’ve helped strengthen. Every vaccine given is a potential key to housing access. Every pain-relieving treatment is a step toward a better quality of life—for both pet and person. Our Commitment As we continue to grow, our commitment remains the same: to meet people where they are, care for their pets with the respect and quality they deserve, and advocate for a future in which no one is forced to choose between their survival and their animal’s wellbeing. The human-animal bond is powerful, and when nurtured with care and equity, it can be transformational—not just for individuals, but for entire communities. Seattle Veterinary Outreach is here for those stories. We are here for those pets. And we are here for the people who love them. People. Pets. Love.
