Mission Statement
Year Of Joy is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides joyful, cultural and educational experiences for children in underserved communities in Houston.
About This Cause
Nearly 1,000 area children have experienced joyful educational and enriching experiences through Year of Joy, which was started in 2016. The annual Year of Joy Holiday Ice Skating Party at Discovery Green is a holiday tradition that provides a magical experience on ice for children from Third Ward and surrounding communities. In 2022, the event will have some 150 children from area schools, community centers and foster care. It also will include performances by young figure skaters of color, an onstage performance by the Urban Nutcracker and an appearance by Santa. The Year of Joy Skating Scholar program, started in 2020, has provided free skating lessons, skates and gear for three young Houston skaters of color. The goal is to expand this program to offer to more children. Year of Joy also offers a school reading and animal literacy program utilizing “Ava and the Prince: the Adventures of Two Rescue Pups" children's book with visits to more than 50 Houston and San Antonio area schools. Other Year of Joy programs and efforts have included: - "A Wrinkle in Time" movie screening and brunch with actress Storm Reid at City Hall - "Ooh La La" brunch, macaroon-making workshop, art lesson and etiquette class at Artisans Restaurant - Back-to-school tech workshops at Microsoft Galleria (2 sessions) - Urban Nutcracker brunch and performance at Hobby Center - Cuteheads holiday fashion shoot featuring the "Joy" dress - Fellowships for college students to attend virtual journalism conventions and events during the pandemic.
