Mission Statement
Sharing hope through compassionate health care in Haiti
About This Cause
Healthcare in Haiti, Inc is a non-profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization registered in Indianapolis, Indiana that supports improving health care in Haiti by primarily supporting the Bethesda Medical Center located in Vaudreuil, Cap Haitien, Haiti. The Bethesda Medical Center began in 1961 through a single American nurse, and today is a respected center providing medical and dental services, employing over 70 individuals, and being directed and staffed entirely by Haitian physicians, dentists, nurses, physical therapists and support staff. Services include general medicine, dentistry, physical therapy, and 24/7 emergency with ambulance; clinics for maternity, ante natal, vaccination and well baby; treatments for tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, diabetes, malnutrition and hypertension; digital X-ray, medical laboratory and pharmacy. The Bethesda Medical Center is a faith-based organization, and all patients are welcome and treated with equal compassion without regard to faith or the ability to pay. Bethesda is directed by the Haitian physician medical director with support from an international board of directors located in Haiti, the US, the UK and Canada. The HIHI/Bethesda board supports the clinic with funding for general operations as well as providing equipment and technology improvements. Visitors, specifically those with expertise in medicine, dentistry, technology and infrastructure are welcome with advance approval. A guest house is available on site. Bethesda strives to become increasingly sustainable in operation having recently installed a solar power system to provide 24/7 electricity for the clinic which was not available before. A diesel generator is still used during peak loads, although enhancements to the solar system will reduce this need. A long term goal to develop an entirely new medical center campus will provide better care in a more sustainable facility. Information is available on the website.
