Mission Statement
Sandbox Percussion is a percussion quartet that curates musical experiences by taking on creative challenges, transforming them into meaningful art, and sharing this process and its results with our community of listeners, collaborators, students, and mentors.
About This Cause
Sandbox Percussion began as a quartet of percussionists who loved making music together. Beneath this love was a foundational belief that creativity is one of the worlds most precious resources, and musical expression is one way to cultivate that. Naturally, this love of music-making lead to a love for music-sharing with audiences through live performances. This sharing of music also expanded to include audio and video recordings, masterclasses, and seminars resulting in two GRAMMY®️ nominations and hundreds of thousands of individuals reached. For Sandbox, music-sharing goes much deeper than simply performing a piece. Music is a relationship, and since most of our music is relatively new, it needs to be properly introduced. The music Sandbox plays is rich with influences not just from the western classical tradition, but from musical traditions all around the globe. Sandbox's aim is to highlight these interactions to its listeners, revealing both the art and the craft behind what is being done. Ultimately, Sandbox hope this inspires some creativity in the listeners as well. Some may think of this as "education", though Sandbox prefers to think of it as a collaborative process where everyone is discovering things. In keeping with this collaborative spirit, another pillar of Sandbox Percussion is the commissioning of new music. Sandbox believes the greatest piece of music is yet to be written, and wants to help make that happen. Sandbox is constantly searching for new creative voices to work with, and is committed to spending the quality time with these individuals necessary to produce meaningful works of art. As of 2022, Sandbox Percussion has premiered over fifty new works and is premiering six more this season. It is thanks to the generosity of Sandbox Percussion's supporters that this work can be done.
