Mission Statement

Ready.Set.Excel's (RSE) mission is to empower students to succeed in math and science. We accomplish this by: (1) Providing diagnostic services to accurately identify unmet needs in a student's foundational math skills; and, (2) Supporting organizations and educators with real-time data and resources to effectively address student needs and improve math confidence. We are deeply committed to supporting students who have been systematically marginalized - specifically, students of color and low-income students. We believe in math equity: all students should have the math skills and self-confidence needed to realize their full potential, pursue an education and earn a living-wage.

About This Cause

RSE provides math intervention and diagnostic services to students from under-resourced communities. We support students and educators to reinforce student math skills and build math confidence. We partner with educators, schools, and community organizations who work with students in-school and after-school. RSE carefully selects partners that provide the social emotional skill development that complements our academic development. Our math intervention/diagnostic services use a non-judgemental, constructive approach which supports the whole child. RSE's proprietary MATH DIAGNOSTIC ASSESSMENTS evaluate and identify in real-time a student's skill needs in foundational math concepts - the basic math skills that are crucial for success in school and life. Results are provided immediately to the teacher/volunteer in the form of a TEACHER DASHBOARD showing the math needs of the student and where to begin helping them master concepts. If math needs are not addressed in a timely fashion, students will struggle, falling further behind and experiencing low self-confidence in their abilities. To ensure students are mastering concepts and becoming math confident we administer a POST ASSESSMENT to measure progress and identify topics requiring further help. A TUTOR PLAYBOOK is in development so volunteers may more effectively help students. It provides resources and strategies to support each student's learning plan. In developing our offerings, we engaged teachers representing the communities we serve: Title 1 schools and those coming from traditionally underrepresented communities. Community Needs Systemic inequalities have resulted in students of color and economically disadvantaged students suffering most from unmet math needs. As an example, a recent assessment given to 9th graders at a Title 1 school revealed that most did not know how to compare and order fractions (a skill typically mastered by 4th grade). The pandemic has only made this situation worse - especially for students who do not have access to, or cannot afford, additional help. We have learned that these topics are important for the students (and their parents) in the communities we serve: 1) Increased math confidence; 2) Empowered parents and students; 3)Improved math skills; and 4) Retained math knowledge. We regularly follow up and meet with the organizations we support making sure to continually incorporate the needs of their communities into our services. We rely on surveys from the students (and parents when appropriate) to understand how they are feeling about their math skills, their self confidence in math, their school and career aspirations and the challenges they are facing.
