For the past three years, Our Lady Maternal Care Inc. has worked at the grassroots level to help the underserved women and children in the rural areas. This has been accomplished by offering free education, counseling nutrition, and obtaining health services. These programs and services are offered to work towards the ultimate goal of reducing maternal and child mortality and empower women to be able to find work and care for their families. Our Lady Maternal Care Inc was founded in 2018 by experienced trained Healthcare Professionals in USA, as well as Health Professionals from Ghana and volunteers from Ghana. The health care professionals include Yaa Asante-Addae, MPH, Nutrition; Bette Lawrence Water, MPH & Practicum Director; Valeon Waller, MHSA, BSN, CCM; Ralph Leno, CEO & President Small Business Bank; John Asante, Vice President Guggenheim; and Kofi Atakora Amaniampong Chemical Engineer. These professionals are from Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, and Kansas. This group began the organization based on the findings of the high rate of maternal child mortality and morbidity in the rural areas of Ghana. The group based on findings into this problem shows that the majority of these deaths could be prevented given the right resources and care. In these remote areas, women, newborns, and children are often the most vulnerable to health problems. Health centers can be difficult to reach, and without alternative forms of transport available to them, women and children sometimes have to walk for days to get to the clinics. Even when they reach the facilities, they might find the clinics understaffed or underequipped. The indigenous women and girls are even more likely to experience worse maternal health outcomes, and frequently face discrimination and abuse from health center staff. At Our Lady Maternal Care Inc., we believe maternal health is particularly important because of the far-reaching impacts it has on families and communities. Not only does access to quality maternal healthcare ensure the good health of a mother – her good health also helps to ensure the good health of her newborn child and the rest of her family. Outcomes of the documented issues were in the availability of transportation to a medical center, communication (due to language barriers) and the provision of medical specialty services. Most of the women in the rural areas have little or nor schooling. From these results Our Lady Maternal Care’s staff and volunteers developed a set of programs and services for the indigenous pregnant women, and pediatric patients and their parents in the rural areas of Ghana. Specifically, access to care, health care interpretation, transportation, and the provision of specialty care physician services. The services offered by Our Lady Maternal Care include: • Access to see a midwife/nurse in OLMC Health center • Pregnancy Tests • Ultrasounds • Antenatal Classes • Child Birthing Classes • Personalized lactation support • Postnatal Support and peer Groups • Nutritional Education on pregnant mothers, nursing mothers, infants, and children five and under. • Infant Massage: - Courses for Mums and Dads. • Stroller Fitness Class
